How Puerto Rico Became Part of the U.S.

Because of this, Puerto Rico became an unincorporated territory of the United States. This means it's a territory that belongs to the U.S. but is not fully integrated into the country.
Population Changes Over Time
In 1899, the United States Department of War conducted a census in Puerto Rico. A census is like a big count of all the people living in an area. This first count showed that 1,246 people lived in Jájome Alto barrio.
