Jack Dalrymple is an American politician and businessman. He was born on October 16, 1948. He served as the 32nd Governor of North Dakota from 2010 to 2016. Before that, he was the 36th Lieutenant Governor of North Dakota from 2000 to 2010. He is a member of the Republican Party.
Mr. Dalrymple became governor when the previous governor, John Hoeven, was elected to the United States Senate. Before becoming lieutenant governor, Dalrymple was a member of the North Dakota House of Representatives. He served there for eight terms, from 1985 to 2000. He also ran for the U.S. Senate two times.

Early Life and Education
Jack Dalrymple was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota. His family lived on a wheat farm in Casselton, North Dakota. This farm was started by his great-grandfather in 1875.
He went to The Blake School, a private school. After high school, he attended Yale University. He graduated from Yale in 1970 with a degree in American Studies.
Career in Agriculture
After college, Dalrymple returned to North Dakota. He started managing his family's farm. The Dalrymple Farm grew a type of wheat called durum wheat.
In 1983, he was named the Outstanding Young Farmer of the United States. This award recognized his work in farming.
In 1992, Dalrymple helped start the Dakota Growers Pasta Company. This company was a cooperative, meaning it was owned by many wheat farmers. It grew to be one of the largest pasta makers in North America. Dalrymple helped the company change its structure to grow even more. In 2010, the company was sold.
Community Service
Jack Dalrymple has also helped his community. In 1975, he helped create ShareHouse Inc. This program helps people get support for personal challenges.
During the 1980s, he worked on the Casselton Jobs Development Commission. This group worked to create jobs in his hometown.
In the 1990s, he was the chairman of the board for Prairie Public Television. This is a public media service for North Dakota.
Serving in the State Legislature
In 1984, Dalrymple was elected to the North Dakota House of Representatives. This is part of North Dakota's state government. He was re-elected seven more times, serving until 2000. He represented the area around Casselton.
He led the House Appropriations Committee for four years. This committee is in charge of deciding how the state's money is spent. He also led a group that reviewed spending between legislative sessions.

Jack Dalrymple ran for the U.S. Senate twice.
1988 Election
In 1987, he announced he would run for the U.S. Senate. He did not win the Republican nomination that year.
1992 Special Election
In 1992, a special election was held for a U.S. Senate seat. Dalrymple won the Republican nomination for this election. However, he lost the election to Kent Conrad.
Lieutenant Governor of North Dakota
In 2000, Dalrymple was elected Lieutenant Governor of North Dakota. He ran with John Hoeven, who became governor. They were re-elected together in 2004 and 2008.
Governor of North Dakota
On December 7, 2010, Jack Dalrymple became the Governor of North Dakota. This happened after Governor Hoeven resigned to become a U.S. Senator. Dalrymple then chose Drew Wrigley to be his new Lieutenant Governor.
In 2011, Governor Dalrymple announced he would run for a full four-year term. In 2012, he won the election against Ryan Taylor. He served a full term as governor.
In 2015, Governor Dalrymple announced he would not run for re-election in 2016.
Personal Life
Jack Dalrymple married Betsy Wood in 1971. They have four daughters.
Dakota Access Pipeline Protests
In 2016, there were protests against the Dakota Access Pipeline. These protests involved groups like the Standing Rock Sioux tribe. Governor Dalrymple called in the North Dakota National Guard to help manage the situation.
