Jackpot is a small community in Elko County, Nevada, United States. It's called a census-designated place (CDP) because it's a community that the government counts for population, but it doesn't have its own city government. In 2020, about 855 people lived there.

Jackpot is very close to the border of Idaho, less than 1 mile away. It's located right on US 93. Because of its location, Jackpot has become a popular spot for people from Idaho and nearby states to visit casinos.

The town is about 47 miles south of Twin Falls, Idaho, a much larger city. Even though Jackpot is officially part of the Elko area, many people think of it as part of the bigger Twin Falls region. Besides casinos, Jackpot has its own schools, a golf course, and a post office. It sits high up, about 5,200 feet above sea level.

Jackpot follows Mountain Time, just like some other towns near the Idaho border. This is because it has strong business connections with the southern Idaho area known as the Magic Valley.

History of Jackpot

How Jackpot Started

In 1954, the state of Idaho made all casino gaming illegal. Because of this, two people named "Cactus Pete" Piersanti and Don French decided to move their slot machine businesses. They moved them from Idaho to the spot where Jackpot is now. Their gaming places were called Cactus Pete's and the Horseshu Club. Many people give Cactus Pete Piersanti credit for starting the town of Jackpot.

Naming the Town

In May 1958, local officials in Elko County first recognized the settlement. They called it "Horse Shu" and said it had 65 people. However, Cactus Pete's didn't like that name. Since the club owners couldn't agree, the county changed the name to "Unincorporated Town No. 1" a month later. Finally, in 1959, the clubs agreed on the name "Jackpot." This name is known for being very unique and interesting for a town in Nevada.

Early Growth

By 1960, Jackpot's population grew to 400 people. But most residents lived in trailers. Banks were not sure if the town would last, so they didn't want to give out loans for building houses.

In 1964, the company that owned Cactus Pete's also took over the Horseshu. These businesses eventually became part of a larger company called Ameristar Casinos. Today, the town's economy mainly relies on casinos like Cactus Pete's, Horseshu, Barton's Club 93, and the Four Jacks Casino.

Geography of Jackpot

Jackpot is located near Salmon Falls Creek. It's also north of Middle Stack Mountain, which is in the Granite Range of northeast Nevada. The town is about 50 miles east of Jarbidge, another small town, and the Jarbidge Wilderness area.

Population and People

The 2020 United States census reported that Jackpot had 855 residents. In 2010, the population was 1,195 people.

  • About 61% of the people were White.
  • About 32% were from other racial backgrounds.
  • About 4% were from two or more races.
  • About 56% of the people were Hispanic or Latino.

There were 451 households in Jackpot. About 33% of these households had children under 18 living there. The average household had 2.65 people.

Climate in Jackpot

Jackpot has a climate with hot summers and cold winters. It gets just enough rain to avoid being called a desert. Because Jackpot is high up and dry, temperatures drop a lot after the sun goes down. Summer nights are usually cool. Winter days are often above freezing, but winter nights can be very cold, sometimes dropping below zero degrees.
