The Story of Jackson Lake Lodge
In 1950, a man named John D. Rockefeller, Jr. asked architect Gilbert Stanley Underwood to design Jackson Lake Lodge. This building was special because it showed a new way of designing buildings in national parks. Before this, park buildings often looked very rustic, like old cabins. But this lodge started a move towards more modern designs.
Underwood changed how park buildings were made. He mixed modern materials with rustic touches. For example, the concrete walls look like wood grain. Rockefeller wanted this lodge to help all Americans visit and enjoy national parks. At first, some people thought the lodge looked too modern. But it was built to fit in with nature. It has a low shape that blends with the aspen and pine trees. Landscapers also planted local plants to make it look natural.
A National Historic Landmark
In 2003, Jackson Lake Lodge was named a National Historic Landmark. This means it is a very important historical place in the United States. Architect Gilbert Stanley Underwood finished designing the lodge in 1955. It is a great example of the "International Style" of architecture. This style was popular for buildings on U.S. Government lands in the mid-1900s. The lodge combines older, rustic ideas with modern design. This mix became common for park buildings in the decades that followed.
Important Meetings at the Lodge
Every year, the Federal Reserve holds a special meeting at Jackson Lake Lodge. This meeting happens in late summer. The Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City hosts it. Important economic leaders from all over the world come to discuss money and the economy.
The Old Jackson Lake Lodge
The current lodge was built on the site of an older one. This first lodge was called the Amoretti Hotel and Camp Company's Jackson Lake Lodge. Eugene Amoretti built it in 1922. His lodge was special because it had the first hot and cold running water in the valley. It offered guest cabins and tent cabins. The Snake River Land Company bought it in 1930. It kept running until 1953. Then, its 23 cabins were taken down to make way for the new, modern lodge we see today.
Jackson Lake Lodge was officially named a National Historic Landmark on July 31, 2003.
