Jacob City is a small town in Jackson County, Florida, United States. It's located in the Florida Panhandle, which is the northwestern part of Florida. Most of its residents are African American. In 2020, about 217 people lived there.

A Look at Jacob City's Past

The story of Jacob City began in the early 1800s. Many people who had been enslaved moved from a place called Webbville. They wanted to live away from the unfair treatment they faced there. Most people from Webbville later moved to Marianna in 1882. Webbville no longer exists today.

The first known settlement in this area was by a white man named Jacob Jones. He welcomed Black people to live on his land. This is how Jacob City got its name. People would tell their friends, "Let's go to Jacob's!" As more Black people arrived to escape unfair treatment, they moved further into the area. They created horse wagon trails that became dirt roads, forming a small community.

Jacob: A Pioneer Black Community

By the mid-1800s, Jacob became the first Black community in Jackson County. Black residents even started their own store. Sadly, the owner was murdered, and the store never opened again.

Later, in the late 1800s, the St. Mary Missionary Baptist Church was built on what is now Main Street. This church is so important that it has a special historical marker in Jacob City.

Growing and Learning in Jacob City

In the early 1900s, Jacob's dirt roads got better, and more people moved there. However, many families faced poverty because there wasn't a school for Black children.

St. Mary's Church tried to help by providing a school. But many students couldn't finish their education past seventh grade. They had to leave school to help their parents with farm work at home.

In 1953, a new school called St. Paul's was built near Campbellton. This school served as both an elementary and high school. It gave children from Jacob a chance to get a better education. The Campbellton school stayed open until 1972.

By the late 1900s, Jacob became more modern. It joined the Florida League of Cities, which helps cities work together. In 1983, Jacob officially became the "City of Jacob City" and built its own city hall.
