Jacques-Joseph-André Bouhy (born June 18, 1848 – died January 29, 1929) was a talented singer from Belgium. He was known as a baritone, which is a male singing voice that is lower than a tenor but higher than a bass. Bouhy became very famous for being the first person to sing the exciting "Toreador Song" when he played the character Escamillo in the well-known opera Carmen.

Early Life and Opera Beginnings

Jacques Bouhy was born in a town called Pepinster in Belgium. He loved music and studied at the Liège Conservatory of Music, which is a special school for musicians. After finishing his studies, he made his first big performance in 1871 at the Paris Opéra in France. He sang the role of Méphistophélès in the opera Faust.

A Star on Stage

Bouhy quickly became a popular opera singer. In 1875, he performed at another famous theater, the Opéra-Comique. Here, he sang the role of Figaro in Le Nozze di Figaro. Most importantly, he created the role of Escamillo in the opera Carmen at this theater in the same year. This is where he first sang the iconic "Toreador Song," which is still very famous today. He also created another role, Don César de Bazan, in an opera of the same name in 1872.

In 1882, Bouhy traveled to London and performed at the Covent Garden. He sang in both Faust and Carmen there, showing his talent to audiences in England.

Teaching Music in America

Later, Jacques Bouhy spent some time in the United States. He became the very first director of the National Conservatory of Music of America in New York City. This was a big job, as he helped guide young musicians and shape the future of music education in America. After his time in the U.S., he returned to Paris. In 1890, he sang the role of the High Priest in the opera Samson et Dalila. People really loved his performances, and even famous composers like Massenet admired his singing.

Inspiring Future Singers

Jacques Bouhy was not only a great performer but also an excellent teacher. Many singers learned from him or received valuable advice. Some of his notable students included Gervase Elwes, Clara Butt, Louise Kirkby Lunn, Suzanne Adams, Bessie Abott, Leon Rains, Eva Gauthier, Olive Rae, Florence Turner-Maley, Lillian Blauvelt, Louise Homer, Nellie A. Hope, and Jessie M. Soga. He helped many young singers develop their skills and become successful.

Jacques Bouhy passed away in Paris in January 1929, at the age of 80. He left behind a wonderful legacy as a pioneering opera singer and a dedicated teacher.
