Jacques Kazadi (born 23 December 1936 – died 23 April 2020) was an important person from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. He was an economist, a professor, and a politician. An economist is someone who studies how money, goods, and services are made and used.

Life and Education

Jacques Kazadi finished his high school studies at Collège Saint-Joseph in Kananga, which was then called Luluabourg. After that, he went to Lovanium University.

From 1967 to 1971, he lived in Belgium with his wife and children. There, he studied at the Université catholique de Louvain. He earned a special degree called a doctorate in economics. This means he became an expert in how economies work.

Career as a Professor and Leader

Professor Kazadi taught at many universities. He taught in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and in other countries. Some of these universities included the University of Kinshasa and the University of Michigan in the United States.

He made history by becoming the first black Dean of the Faculty of Economic Sciences. A dean is a leader of a university department. Later, he also became the first President of the Council for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa (CODESRIA). He led CODESRIA from 1973 to 1976. CODESRIA is the biggest group of social science experts in Africa.

Political Life

In the 1970s, Jacques Kazadi became involved in politics. He joined the Popular Movement of the Revolution party. This party was led by Mobutu Sese Seko. At that time, Zaire (now the Democratic Republic of the Congo) was a one-party state. This means only one political party was allowed to exist.

Kazadi served as the Secretary of the Treasury. This role meant he was in charge of the country's money and finances. He stayed in this position until 24 April 1990, when he left the party.

He also wrote several books and papers about economics. Some of his works include Problématique de l’application du SMIG (2004), Politique salariale dans la fonction publique (2007), and L’entreprise privée nationale et la gestion moderne (2008). These books discussed important economic topics like wages and how businesses are run.

Family Life

Jacques Kazadi was married and had four children. One of his children is Nicolas Kazadi. Jacques Kazadi passed away on 23 April 2020, in Kinshasa. He was 83 years old.
