A Look at Jagüeyes' Past
How Jagüeyes Became Part of the U.S.
Puerto Rico was once controlled by Spain. After the Spanish–American War in 1898, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This happened because of a special agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898.
Because of this treaty, Puerto Rico became an unincorporated territory of the United States. This means it is a territory that belongs to the U.S. but is not fully a part of it, like a state.
Counting the People: Early Census Data
In 1899, the United States Department of War conducted a census in Puerto Rico. A census is like a big count of all the people living in an area. This count helps us understand how many people live in different places.
The census found that the combined population of Jagüeyes and a nearby barrio called Bairoa was 1,099 people. This gives us an idea of how many people lived there a long time ago.
