Syed Ishtiaq Ahmed Jaffrey (born on March 19, 1939 – died on July 8, 2020), known by his stage name Jagdeep, was a famous Indian actor and comedian. He appeared in over 400 films during his long career. Many people remember him for his funny roles, like Soorma Bhopali in the classic movie Sholay (1975). He also played Machchar in Purana Mandir (1983) and was Salman Khan's dad in Andaz Apna Apna (1994). Jagdeep even directed a film called Soorma Bhopali, where he played the main character.

Jagdeep's Early Life and Challenges

Jagdeep, whose birth name was Syed Ishtiaq Ahmed Jaffrey, was born into a family that was once quite comfortable. His father worked as a lawyer for the local ruler in Datia. Jagdeep was the youngest of ten children.

When Jagdeep was around seven or eight years old, his father passed away. This sad event changed his family's life significantly. His mother moved with him to Karachi to live with his older brothers. However, they soon returned to India because of the big changes happening during the Partition of India.

After returning to Bombay (now Mumbai), Jagdeep and his mother faced very difficult times. They struggled to find their older brothers and had to find ways to survive. Young Jagdeep worked hard, selling various items like clothes, toys, kites, soap, and combs to earn money. When money was scarce, they often struggled to find enough food.

A Star's Journey: Jagdeep's Film Career

Jagdeep began his journey in the film industry at a very young age. He started as a child actor in 1951. His first film was B. R. Chopra's Afsana.

From Child Artist to Comedian

As a child artist, Jagdeep appeared in several notable films. These included Ab Dilli Door Nahin, K. A. Abbas's Munna, Guru Dutt's Aar Paar, Bimal Roy's Do Bigha Zamin, and AVM's Hum Panchhi Ek Daal Ke.

Later, AVM Productions gave him leading roles in movies like Bhabhi, Barkha, and Bindiya. He continued to play lead characters in a few more films. However, he truly found his calling as a comedian after the movie Brahmachari. He became famous for his funny characters and made audiences laugh for decades.

Some popular songs were even featured on him, such as "Paas baitho tabiyat bahal jayegi" from Punarmilan and "In pyar ki rahon mein" from the same film. Other well-known songs include "Chal ud ja re Panchhi" and "Chali Chali re Patang" from the hit movie Bhabhi, where he acted alongside Nanda. He also featured in "Aa Gaye Yaaro Jeene Ke Din" from Phir Wohi Raat.

Memorable Roles and Performances

Jagdeep was also known for his appearances in many horror movies, especially those made by the Ramsay Brothers. He starred in popular films like Purana Mandir and 3D Saamri. His ability to bring humor to different genres showed his talent.

Jagdeep passed away at his home in Mumbai on July 8, 2020. He was 81 years old and had been dealing with health issues related to his age.

Jagdeep's Family Life

Jagdeep was married three times and had six children. From his first wife, Naseem Begum, he had three children: Hussein, Shakira, and Suraiya.

In 1960, he married Sughra Begum. They had two sons, Javed Jaffrey and Naved Jaffrey. Both Javed and Naved became well-known in the entertainment industry. Naved and Javed were famous hosts of the popular dance show Boogie Woogie.

Later, Jagdeep married Nazima. They had one daughter together, named Muskaan Jaffrey.
