The World of Jak and Daxter
All Jak and Daxter games take place on a planet that looks a lot like Earth. Many creatures who look like humans with long ears live there.
A long time ago, special beings called "Precursors" lived on this planet. They disappeared, but they left behind amazing machines. People now use these machines. Outside of the cities and villages, the world is full of wild and dangerous animals.
Understanding Eco Energy
The people in the game world use a special substance called "Eco." You can find Eco as a gas, a liquid, or even as solid crystals. There are different kinds of Eco, and each type has unique powers.
For example, Green Eco can heal injuries or fix damage. Blue Eco can make things move much faster. There is also Dark Eco, which is very dangerous. It can kill or mutate living things.
In the first game, Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy, Daxter falls into a pit of Dark Eco. This causes him to change into an "Ottsel." An Ottsel is a made-up animal that is a mix between an otter and a weasel.
How to Play the Games
When Naughty Dog first announced Jak and Daxter, many people were excited. This was because Naughty Dog had also made the very popular Crash Bandicoot games.
Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy was one of the first video games to use "streaming." This means the game loads as you play it. Because of this, there are no loading screens to wait for. The game was also similar to Super Mario 64 and Banjo-Kazooie. Players had to jump, explore, and collect special items to win.
Evolving Gameplay Styles
After The Precursor Legacy, the Jak and Daxter games changed. They were no longer just about jumping and finding things. Jak II, the second game, gave players guns to shoot and vehicles to drive. This was similar to games like the Grand Theft Auto series.
The first three games in the series, Precursor Legacy, Jak II, and Jak 3, still focus on platforming. Players control Jak or Daxter. They solve jumping puzzles to reach a goal.
Your character can only be hit a few times by wild animals or monsters before they "die." If they die, you have to start the goal over. But you can get your life back by touching Green Eco. In Jak 3, you can find armor that lets Jak take more hits before dying.
Players can also use attacks or guns to defeat monsters. This helps keep Jak or Daxter from getting hurt.
