James Farentino (born February 24, 1938 – died January 24, 2012) was an American actor. He was known for his many roles in television shows, films, and plays. He acted in almost 100 different productions during his career. Some of his most famous roles were in The Final Countdown, Jesus of Nazareth, and Dynasty.

Acting Career

James Farentino was born in Brooklyn, New York. He went to local schools and later studied acting at a Catholic school.

Early Roles

In the 1950s and 1960s, Farentino started his career on stage. He also began to appear in television shows. One of his early TV roles was in The Alfred Hitchcock Hour. In 1969, he acted with Patty Duke in the movie Me, Natalie.

From 1969 to 1972, Farentino was one of the lawyers in the NBC TV series The Bold Ones. He also appeared in the TV series Night Gallery twice. In 1970, he was in an episode of The Men From Shiloh, which was also known as The Virginian.

Key Roles in the 1970s and 1980s

In 1978, James Farentino was nominated for a special award called a Primetime Emmy Award. This was for his amazing acting as Simon Peter in the TV miniseries Jesus of Nazareth.

In 1980, Farentino starred in the movie The Final Countdown. In this film, he acted alongside famous actors like Kirk Douglas and Martin Sheen. The next year, in 1981, he played Juan Perón in the TV movie Evita Perón.

Farentino also played Frank Chaney in the TV series Blue Thunder in 1984. From 1981 to 1982, he was Dr. Nick Toscanni in the popular TV show Dynasty.

Later Work

In the late 1990s, Farentino appeared in the medical drama ER. He played the father of one of the main characters, Doug Ross. He continued to act in various roles until 2006.

James Farentino was married four times:

  • He was married to Elizabeth Ashley from 1962 to 1965.
  • He married Michele Lee in 1966, and they had one child named David, born in 1969. They were married until 1982.
  • His third marriage was to Debrah Farentino from 1985 to 1988.
  • He married Stella Farentino in 1994. They remained married until his death.

Death

James Farentino passed away on January 24, 2012, in Los Angeles, California. He was 73 years old and died after a long illness, just one month before his 74th birthday.
