James Fleetwood (born 1603, died 1683) was an important English church leader. He served as a clergyman, which is a minister or priest, and later became a Bishop in the Church of England.

Early Life and Education

James Fleetwood was born on April 25, 1603, in Chalfont St Giles, England. He came from an old and respected family in Lancashire. His father was Sir George Fleetwood.

Young James went to two famous schools. He studied at Eton, a well-known school for boys. After that, he attended King's College, Cambridge, which is part of the University of Cambridge.

Becoming a Church Leader

After finishing his studies, James Fleetwood decided to become a clergyman. This process is called ordination. His first job was as a chaplain to Dr. Wright, who was the Bishop of Lichfield. A chaplain is like a personal minister or spiritual advisor.

Later, he became the vicar of a church in Prees, Shropshire. A vicar is a priest in charge of a local church. He also became a Prebendary of Eccleshall, which meant he held a special position within the church.

The English Civil War

James Fleetwood was a strong supporter of the King during the English Civil War. People who supported the King were called Royalists. He served as a chaplain in the King's army during this difficult time.

In 1642, King Charles I recognized Fleetwood's loyalty and service. The King gave him a special degree called a Doctorate of Divinity. This was a high honor for his work, especially after the Battle of Edge Hill. In the same year, he became the rector of Sutton Coldfield. A rector is another type of priest in charge of a parish. He also became a chaplain to Prince Charles, who would later become King Charles II.

After the War

When the Civil War ended, things changed for Royalists like Fleetwood. He was removed from his position at Sutton Coldfield. However, when the King was brought back to power during the Restoration in 1660, Fleetwood's career took off again.

King Charles II appointed him as his own chaplain. He also became the Provost of King's College, Cambridge. A Provost is the head of a college or university. He later served as rector in other towns, including Anstey, Hertfordshire and Denham, Buckinghamshire. In 1675, he reached a very high position when he was appointed Bishop of Worcester.
