History of the Mansion
The Time of James Lick
The buildings at the James Lick Mansion show how the property has been used over many years. James Lick built a brick granary and a millpond around 1855. These were part of his original mill. He also built the large mansion around 1858. Later, an office building was added.
Lick built this beautiful Italianate Victorian mansion between 1858 and 1860. It was right next to his flour mill. The mansion is made of native redwood wood. It has fancy woodwork and marble fireplaces in each of its 24 rooms.
James Lick grew up on a farm. This helped him see that the land was perfect for growing crops. Around his mansion and mill, Lick started a very successful orchard. He was one of the first to bring new fruits and gardening methods to the area. For example, he planted large cork oak trees. These trees are still standing today at the Mansion Grove property.
What Happened Later
In 1882, a fire destroyed the mill building. Then, in 1902, the Lick Mill complex was changed. It started making alcohol instead. Over the years, many different companies owned the property. These included Union Distilling and Western Grain and Sugar Products. They made many different things at this location.
The Mansion Today
The Lick Mansion and its grounds are located at 4101 Lick Mill Blvd. in Santa Clara. They are part of the Mansion Grove Apartment complex. The property is now privately owned. However, the City of Santa Clara says that people still have the right to visit this important historic place.
