The Jarbidge Mountains are a cool mountain range located in northern Elko County, Nevada, United States. This area is known for its tall peaks and beautiful nature. The main part of these mountains, where the highest peaks are, stretches about 5 miles (8 kilometers) south from a small town called Jarbidge.

Exploring the Jarbidge Mountains

The Jarbidge Mountains are not just one big mountain. They include several smaller mountain areas, or "sub-ranges." Some of these are the Bruneau Range, Copper Mountains, and Elk Mountains. These all form part of the larger Jarbidge Mountain system.

A large part of the Jarbidge Mountains, including its highest peaks, is found within the Jarbidge Ranger District of the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest. This is a big forest managed by the government. There's also a special protected area called the Jarbidge Wilderness, which includes the central Jarbidge Mountains and the Marys River Range. This wilderness area helps protect the natural environment.

What Does "Jarbidge" Mean?

The name "Jarbidge" comes from the Shoshone language. In Shoshone, it means "devil." Long ago, the Native American people believed that these hills were haunted or had a mysterious, powerful spirit. This is why they gave the mountains this unique name.
