Jasmin Moghbeli, born on June 24, 1983, is an amazing American Marine Corps test pilot and a NASA astronaut. She studied at top schools like the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and the Naval Test Pilot School. Jasmin was the commander for the SpaceX Crew-7 mission and worked as a flight engineer on the International Space Station during Expedition 69 and 70.

Early Life and Education
Jasmin Moghbeli was born in Bad Nauheim, West Germany, on June 24, 1983. Her family moved to the United States in early 1984. Her father, Kamran (Kamy) Moghbeli, was an architect who came to Germany from Tehran, Iran. Her mother is Fereshta (Fery) Moghbeli. Jasmin also has an older brother named Kaveh.
Jasmin speaks Persian and English. She also learned Russian during her astronaut training. She went to Baldwin Senior High School in New York. Later, she earned a bachelor's degree in aerospace engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). While at MIT, she was a talented athlete, playing volleyball, lacrosse, and basketball.
Military Career
In 2005, Jasmin Moghbeli became an officer in the United States Marine Corps. She trained to become a pilot for the AH-1 Super Cobra helicopter. During her time in the Marine Corps, she went on three overseas missions. She flew 150 combat missions, including flights in Afghanistan.
She earned a master's degree in aerospace engineering from the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School in California. Jasmin then attended the U.S. Naval Test Pilot School in Maryland. She became a helicopter test pilot, working at Marine Corps Air Station Yuma in Arizona. By 2019, she had flown for over 2,000 hours.
Becoming a NASA Astronaut
In June 2017, Jasmin Moghbeli was chosen to be part of NASA Astronaut Group 22. This was a big step toward becoming an astronaut! She then started two years of special training.
In January 2020, she successfully finished the NASA Astronaut Candidate Training Program. This meant she was officially ready for spaceflight. She could now be assigned to missions to the International Space Station, Artemis missions to the Moon, and even future missions to Mars.
Space Missions
In March 2022, Jasmin Moghbeli was given an exciting role: commander of the SpaceX Crew-7 mission. This was her very first trip to space! The mission launched to the International Space Station on August 26, 2023.
She spent 199 days in space, orbiting Earth 3,184 times. On March 12, 2024, the mission safely landed off the coast of Florida.
Personal Life
Jasmin Moghbeli is married to Sam Wald. They have twin daughters. Their family celebrates both Christmas and Hanukkah. Jasmin even celebrated Hanukkah while she was in space!
She is very proud of her American and Persian background. She once said, "Reflecting on this past year, I stand here so proud of my Persian heritage but also incredibly proud to be an American." She still celebrates Nowruz, which is the Persian New Year.
Becoming an astronaut was Jasmin's dream since she was a child. When she was in sixth grade, she wrote a book report about the first woman in space, Soviet cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova.
Awards and Honors
Jasmin Moghbeli has received many awards for her bravery and skill. These include four Air Medals, a Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, and three Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals. She also received special awards from the United States Naval Test Pilot School for being an outstanding student.
