Jasmin Moghbeli, born on June 24, 1983, is an amazing American NASA astronaut. She is also a skilled test pilot for the U.S. Marine Corps. Jasmin studied at top schools like the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). She was the leader (commander) of the SpaceX Crew-7 mission. She also worked as a flight engineer on the International Space Station (ISS).

Jasmin's Early Life and School

Jasmin Moghbeli was born in Bad Nauheim, West Germany, on June 24, 1983. Her father, Kamran (Kamy) Moghbeli, was an architect. He moved to Germany from Tehran, Iran, in 1980. Jasmin's family lived in Bad Nauheim until early 1984. Then, they moved to the United States. Her mother's name is Fereshta (Fery) Moghbeli. Jasmin also has an older brother named Kaveh. He is a doctor who specializes in lung and intensive care medicine.

Jasmin speaks Persian and English. She also learned Russian during her astronaut training. She went to Baldwin Senior High School in New York. Jasmin earned a bachelor's degree in aerospace engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). While at MIT, she was a great athlete. She played volleyball, lacrosse, and basketball for the MIT Engineers teams.

Her Military Career

In 2005, Jasmin Moghbeli became an officer in the United States Marine Corps. She trained to fly the AH-1 Super Cobra helicopter. During her time in the Marine Corps, she went overseas three times. She flew 150 combat missions.

Jasmin earned a master's degree in aerospace engineering from the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School in California. She then went to the U.S. Naval Test Pilot School in Maryland. There, she became a helicopter test pilot. She worked with VMX-1 at Marine Corps Air Station Yuma in Arizona. By 2019, she had flown for over 2,000 hours. This included 150 combat missions, like flights in Afghanistan.

Becoming a NASA Astronaut

In June 2017, Jasmin Moghbeli was chosen to join NASA Astronaut Group 22. This meant she would train to become an astronaut. Her training lasted for two years. In January 2020, she finished the NASA Astronaut Candidate Training Program. This made her ready for spaceflights. She could be sent to the International Space Station, or even to the Moon and Mars.

In March 2022, Jasmin was named the commander of the SpaceX Crew-7 mission. This was her first trip to space. The mission launched to the space station on August 26, 2023. On March 12, 2024, the mission landed safely off the coast of Florida. Jasmin spent 199 days in space and orbited Earth 3,184 times!

Jasmin's Personal Life

Jasmin Moghbeli is married to Sam Wald. They have twin girls together. Sam is Jewish, so they celebrate both Christmas and Hanukkah at home. Jasmin even celebrated Hanukkah while she was in space!

She is very proud of her American and Persian heritage. She once said, "Reflecting on this past year, I stand here so proud of my Persian heritage but also incredibly proud to be an American." She still celebrates Nowruz, which is the Persian New Year.

Becoming an astronaut was Jasmin's dream since she was a child. When she was in sixth grade, she wrote a book report about the first woman in space, Soviet cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova.

Awards and Honors

Jasmin Moghbeli has received many awards for her service. These include:

  • Four Air Medals
  • A Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal
  • Three Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals

She also received special awards from the United States Naval Test Pilot School. These were the Class 144 Outstanding Developmental Phase II Award and the Commander Willie McCool Outstanding Student Award. This last award meant she was the top student in her class.
