Jason Maurice Capel was born on January 15, 1980. He is an American college basketball coach. Currently, he works as an assistant coach for the Pittsburgh team.
Before this, he was the head coach for the Appalachian State Mountaineers men's basketball team. Jason also played basketball for the North Carolina Tar Heels. He is the brother of Jeff Capel, who played for Duke University and is now the head coach at the University of Pittsburgh. Jason Capel has also worked as a sports commentator for basketball games.

Playing Basketball: Jason's College Years
Jason Capel was a talented basketball player. He played as a small forward, standing 6 feet 8 inches tall and weighing 220 pounds. He was born in Fayetteville, North Carolina.
In 1996, he was named Virginia Mr. Basketball, which is a big award for high school players. He is one of only nine players ever to start for the UNC basketball team for all four years he was eligible. During his senior year, he was the team's top scorer, averaging 15.6 points per game. He also helped his team reach the NCAA Final Four in 2000, which is a major achievement in college basketball.
Playing Professionally: After College
After college, Jason Capel was not chosen in the NBA draft in 2002. He briefly joined the Charlotte Bobcats team but did not play in an official NBA game. He chose to play in the NBA D-League for the Fayetteville Patriots. This team was coached by his father, Jeff Capel II.
He played in the D-League from 2002 to 2004. After that, he played professionally in Japan for the Aisin Seahorses during the 2004–2005 season. He also played in Italy for teams like BT Roseto (2005–2006) and Air Avellino (2006). Jason finished his professional playing career in Serbia with KK Crvena zvezda in 2007.
Coaching Career: Leading Teams
Jason Capel began his coaching journey in 2009. He joined the staff of Buzz Peterson as an assistant coach at Appalachian State. When Buzz Peterson left to become a head coach elsewhere, Jason Capel was offered the main coaching job.
On April 21, 2010, it was officially announced that Jason Capel would be the new head coach for the Appalachian State Mountaineers. He was the 15th head coach in the program's history. His contract was not renewed after the 2013–14 season. In that season, the Mountaineers had a record of 9 wins and 21 losses. This was their third year in a row with a losing record under his leadership.
