Jason Maurice Capel (born January 15, 1980) is an American college basketball coach. He currently works as an assistant coach for the Pittsburgh team. Before this, he was the head coach for the Appalachian State Mountaineers men's basketball team.
Jason Capel used to play basketball for the North Carolina Tar Heels. He is the brother of Jeff Capel, who played basketball for Duke University. Jeff Capel is now the head coach at the University of Pittsburgh. Jason Capel has also worked as a sports commentator, talking about ACC basketball games. He is married to Ashley Heath, who also graduated from UNC.
Playing Career: Jason Capel on the Court
Jason Capel is 6 feet 8 inches tall and weighed 220 pounds when he played. He played as a small forward. He was born in Fayetteville, North Carolina. In 1996, he was named Virginia Mr. Basketball. He is one of only nine players who started for the UNC basketball team in all four years he was eligible.
In his final year at UNC, he was the team's top scorer. He averaged 15.6 points per game. He also played in the NCAA Final Four in 2000.
After college, Jason Capel was not chosen in the NBA draft in 2002. He briefly joined the Charlotte Bobcats team but never played in an NBA game. He then chose to play in the NBA D-League for the Fayetteville Patriots. His father, Jeff Capel II, coached this team. He played two years in the D-League (2002–2004). After that, he played basketball professionally in Japan for the Aisin Seahorses (2004–2005).
From 2005 to 2006, he played for BT Roseto in Italy's Serie A league. From July to December 2006, he played with Air Avellino in the same league. Jason Capel finished his professional playing career in Serbia. He played for KK Crvena zvezda in the Naša Sinalko Liga in 2007.
Coaching Career: Leading the Team
In 2009, Jason Capel became an assistant coach at Appalachian State. He worked with head coach Buzz Peterson. When Buzz Peterson left to become the head coach at UNCW, Jason Capel was offered the top coaching job. On April 21, 2010, it was announced that Capel was the new head coach of the Mountaineers. He was the 15th head coach in the program's history.
After the 2013–14 season, Capel's contract was not renewed. The Mountaineers finished that season with 9 wins and 21 losses. This was their third year in a row with a losing record under his leadership. Overall, as head coach, Jason Capel had 53 wins and 70 losses.
