Jason Myers' Pro Football Journey
After college, Jason Myers didn't get picked by any professional teams right away. He went back home to San Diego, California. There, he worked as a valet, which means he parked cars for people. But he didn't give up on his dream. He kept practicing his kicking with help from Michael Husted, a former NFL kicker.
Joining the Jacksonville Jaguars
On March 3, 2015, Jason Myers got his big chance. He signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars after showing off his kicking skills at a special tryout.
By August 31, 2015, the Jaguars announced that Myers would be their main placekicker. This happened after their previous kicker, Josh Scobee, was traded to another team.
In the 2016 season, Myers tried to kick many long field goals. He led the league in attempts from over 50 yards, trying 12 of them. He successfully made seven of these long kicks.
However, on October 17, 2017, the Jaguars released Myers. This happened after he missed three long field goals in one game. Two of those misses were from 54 yards away.
First Time with the Seattle Seahawks
On January 3, 2018, Myers signed a contract with the Seattle Seahawks. But his time with them was short. On August 20, 2018, the Seahawks let him go. He lost the starting kicking job to a more experienced player, Sebastian Janikowski.
Playing for the New York Jets
The very next day, August 21, 2018, the New York Jets picked up Myers. This is called being "claimed off waivers" in football. He became the Jets' starting kicker.
On October 14, 2018, Myers had an amazing game against the Indianapolis Colts. He kicked seven field goals, which was a new record for the Jets team! The Jets won that game 42–34. Because of his great performance, he was named the best special teams player in the American Football Conference (AFC) for that week.
In the 2018 season, Myers was very accurate. He made 30 out of 33 extra point attempts and 33 out of 36 field goal attempts. His excellent season earned him a spot on the AFC Pro Bowl team. The Pro Bowl is an all-star game for the best players in the NFL.
Back with the Seattle Seahawks
On March 14, 2019, Jason Myers signed a new, big contract with the Seahawks. It was a four-year deal worth $15.45 million.
On November 3, 2019, Myers missed two field goals against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. One of them could have won the game at the end of regular time. But the Seahawks still won in overtime, 40–34. The next week, on November 11, 2019, Myers made both of his field goal attempts. He even kicked a 42-yard game-winning field goal in overtime! This helped the Seahawks beat the San Francisco 49ers 27–24.
In the 2019 season, Myers made 40 out of 44 extra point attempts and 23 out of 28 field goal attempts.
On November 15, 2020, Myers kicked his longest field goal ever. It was an amazing 61-yard kick against the Rams! This also set a new record for the Seahawks team. On December 20, 2020, he made his 31st field goal in a row. This broke the Seahawks' previous record held by Olindo Mare. He finished the 2020 season perfectly, making all 24 of his field goal attempts. He also made 49 out of 53 extra point attempts.
Myers' streak of consecutive successful field goals reached 37 straight kicks. This was the 4th longest streak in the history of the NFL! On September 26, 2021, the streak ended when he missed a 44-yard field goal. After a tough start to the 2021 season, Myers finished strong. He made 11 of his last 13 field goal attempts. Overall, he made 17 out of 23 field goals and 44 out of 47 extra points in 2021.
In the last game of the 2022 season, Myers missed a field goal that could have won the game. But later, in overtime, he kicked the game-winning field goal! The Seahawks won 19–16 against the Rams. In the 2022 season, Myers made 41 out of 42 extra point attempts and 34 out of 37 field goal attempts. He scored 143 points, which was the most in the entire NFL that season! He was also chosen for the Pro Bowl again for his great performance in 2022.
On January 18, 2023, Myers signed another four-year contract extension with the Seahawks. This made him one of the highest-paid kickers in the league. In September, his teammates chose him to be a team captain.
In Week 10 of the 2023 season, Myers made five field goals, including the game-winner. This helped the Seahawks beat the Washington Commanders 29-26. He was named the NFC Special Teams Player Of The Week for this game. In Week 11, he missed a 55-yard field goal that could have won the game. The Seahawks lost 16-17. After a slow start, Myers finished the 2023 season making 26 of his last 29 field goal attempts. He made 35 out of 42 field goals (83.3%) and all 33 of his extra point attempts (100%). This was the first time he didn't miss an extra point in a season.
