Jason Myers' Football Journey
Jason Myers went to high school at Mater Dei Catholic in Chula Vista, California. After college, he didn't immediately get picked by a professional team. He worked as a valet in San Diego while still practicing his kicking. He got help from Michael Husted, a former NFL kicker, to improve his skills.
Starting with the Jacksonville Jaguars
On March 3, 2015, Jason Myers signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars. He had shown his talent at a tryout. By August 31, 2015, the Jaguars announced that Jason would be their main placekicker. This happened after their previous kicker, Josh Scobee, was traded.
In the 2016 season, Jason was known for trying many long field goals. He attempted 12 kicks from over 50 yards, making seven of them. On October 17, 2017, the Jaguars released Jason. This happened after he missed some long field goals in a game.
First Time with the Seattle Seahawks
On January 3, 2018, Jason Myers signed a contract with the Seattle Seahawks. However, he was released on August 20, 2018. He lost the starting kicking job to an experienced player named Sebastian Janikowski.
Playing for the New York Jets
The very next day, August 21, 2018, the New York Jets picked up Jason. He became their starting kicker. On October 14, 2018, Jason had an amazing game against the Indianapolis Colts. He kicked seven field goals, which set a new record for the Jets team. The Jets won that game 42–34. For his great performance, Jason was named the American Football Conference (AFC) Special Teams Player of the Week. He was also chosen for the AFC Pro Bowl team that season.
Back with the Seattle Seahawks
On March 14, 2019, Jason Myers signed a new four-year contract with the Seahawks. This showed they really wanted him back.
On November 3, 2019, Jason missed two field goals in a game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. One of these could have won the game. But the Seahawks still won in overtime, 40–34. The next week, on November 11, 2019, Jason made both of his field goal attempts. He kicked the game-winning 42-yard field goal in overtime. This helped the Seahawks beat the San Francisco 49ers 27–24.
On November 15, 2020, Jason kicked a career-long 61-yard field goal. This also set a new record for the Seahawks team. On December 20, 2020, he broke another Seahawks record. He made his 31st field goal in a row, passing the old record held by Olindo Mare. Jason finished the 2020 season perfectly, making all 24 of his field goal attempts.
Jason's streak of successful field goals reached 37 in a row. This was the 4th longest streak in NFL history. On September 26, 2021, the streak ended when he missed a kick against the Minnesota Vikings.
In Week 18 of the 2022 season, Jason missed a field goal that could have won the game. But later, he kicked the game-winning field goal in overtime. The Seahawks won 19–16 against the Rams. Jason scored 143 points in the 2022 season, leading the entire NFL. He was also named a Pro Bowler for the 2022 season.
