Early life and family
Jatin and Lalit grew up in a family of musicians. Their family came from Pili Mandori Village in the Hissar area of Haryana state. A very famous musician, Pandit Jasraj, was their uncle. Their father, Pandit Pratap Narayan, taught them most of what they know about music. They also learned to play the guitar and piano from Pyarelal Ramprasad Sharma. He was part of the famous music duo Laxmikant–Pyarelal.
Their sisters are the Hindi film actresses Sulakshana Pandit and Vijayta Pandit. The late music director Aadesh Shrivastava was their brother-in-law. He was married to their younger sister, Vijayta.
Musical career highlights
The Jatin–Lalit music duo was formed by chance. In the early 1980s, Jatin first teamed up with his elder brother, Mandheer. They were known as Jatin-Mandheer. This pair did not have many big hits. However, they got to work with music legends like Kishore Kumar and Mohd Rafi.
Lalit, the youngest brother, was also falling in love with music. Since Jatin-Mandheer wasn't very successful, Lalit wanted to try making music too. So, they decided to form a new music team, and that's how Jatin–Lalit began. Their first project together was a private album called Rhythmic Love. Some songs from this album were later used in successful movies.
They started their official career in 1991. They composed music for the Hindi movie Yaara Dildara. Even though the film was a romance, its music became a huge hit. The song "Bin Tere Sanam" from this movie was very popular. People started noticing them for their work on the movie Khiladi. They also gained fame for "Pehla Nasha," a romantic song from Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikander. This song earned them their first nomination for the Filmfare Award for Best Music Director. Their music for Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman in 1992 was also very successful.
Their music style was greatly influenced by R. D. Burman. In 1994, they created the successful soundtrack for the Shah Rukh Khan movie Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa. Jatin–Lalit's music for the classic film Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge was a massive success. It is remembered as one of the best Bollywood soundtracks ever. This earned them their second Filmfare Award nomination. It is the fifth highest-selling Bollywood soundtrack of all time.
After this, they had more successful scores for Khamoshi: The Musical (1996) and Yes Boss (1997). These films earned them their third and fourth Filmfare nominations. This helped them become top music directors in Bollywood.
Jatin–Lalit's next big success was with Karan Johar's first movie as a director, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. This soundtrack sold 8.5 million copies. It earned them their fifth nomination for Best Music Director at the Filmfare Awards. Pyaar To Hona Hi Tha, released in the same year, and Sarfarosh in 1999 were also very popular. These earned them their sixth and seventh Filmfare nominations.
Mohabbatein (2000), directed by Aditya Chopra, was highly praised. The song "Humko Humise Chura Lo" from it became a classic. This soundtrack earned them their eighth Filmfare nomination. Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham... (2001) was another famous soundtrack. It included songs like "Bole Chudiyaan," which earned them their ninth Filmfare Award nomination.
Before they split up in 2006, they had other successful soundtracks. These include Chalte Chalte (2003), Hum Tum (2004), and Fanaa (2006). Fanaa was their last movie together. These three movies earned them their tenth, eleventh, and twelfth Filmfare nominations. Even though they were nominated 12 times, Jatin–Lalit never won a Filmfare Award. They hold the record for the most nominations without winning.
They composed a total of 473 songs for 72 films. The duo worked with many different lyricists and singers. Some famous singers they worked with include Kumar Sanu, Udit Narayan, Alka Yagnik, and Sonu Nigam. Veteran singers like Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhonsle also sang for them. Singer Abhijeet Bhattacharya gives Jatin–Lalit credit for helping his career become successful.
Jatin–Lalit were among the first composers to create songs for film stars to sing themselves. They composed "Aati Kya Khandala" for actor Aamir Khan in the film Ghulam. Later, they also composed a song for Sanjay Dutt to sing in the film Khoobsurat.
Jatin–Lalit composed the highest-selling Bollywood soundtrack of the year four times. These were Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge in 1995, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai in 1998, Mohabbatein in 2000, and Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham... in 2001.
Acting and TV appearances
Jatin and Lalit appeared in the 1992 hit film Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar. They were seen during the song "Humse Hai Saara Jahaan." Jatin sang the song, and Lalit played the bass guitar. Jatin also performed the song "Roothke Humse" in the film.
Jatin–Lalit were judges on the Zee Television music show Sa Re Ga Ma Pa. They also judged another music show called Star Voice of India. Jatin has appeared as a mentor in the TV show Jhoom India. He was also a judge and mentor on Sony TV's reality show Waar Parriwar.
Separation and reunion
After working together for about 16 years, Jatin and Lalit announced they would be working separately. They said this was due to personal reasons. The exact reasons for their split are still not known.
In February 2020, the Jatin–Lalit duo came back together. They organized a concert in Mumbai, which was very popular. Many leading Bollywood singers performed at this concert.
