Udit Narayan Jha, born on December 1, 1955, is a very famous Indian playback singer. He is best known for singing songs in Hindi films. A playback singer records songs for actors to lip-sync (pretend to sing) in movies.

Udit Narayan has also sung in many other languages. These include Telugu, Kannada, Tamil, Bengali, and Nepali. He has won four National Film Awards and five Filmfare Awards. These are some of the biggest awards in Indian cinema.

The Government of India has honored him with two high awards: the Padma Shri in 2009 and the Padma Bhushan in 2016. These awards recognize his amazing contributions to arts and culture. Many of his songs are even on BBC's list of "Top 40 Bollywood Soundtracks of all time."

Udit Narayan started his singing career in 1980. He sang with famous singers like Mohammed Rafi and Kishore Kumar. He became very popular with the 1988 film Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak. His song "Papa Kehte Hain" from this movie was a huge hit. It helped him win his first Filmfare Award. This movie's soundtrack was one of the best-selling albums in the 1980s.

Udit Narayan Jha was born on December 1, 1955. He comes from a Maithil Brahmin family. His father, Harekrishna Jha, was from Nepal, and his mother, Bhuvaneshwari Jha, was from India.

Udit Narayan was born in Baisi village, which is in the Supaul district of Bihar, India. This village is close to the border with Nepal. His father was a farmer, and his mother was a folk singer. She really encouraged him to pursue music.

He went to Jageshwar High School in Bihar, India. Later, he studied at Ratna Rajya Lakshmi Campus in Kathmandu, Nepal.

Family Life

Udit Narayan has been married to Deepa Gahatraj since 1985. They have a son named Aditya Narayan. Aditya is also a well-known playback singer, just like his father.

Singing Career

Udit Narayan was one of the most important singers in Bollywood during the 1990s and early 2000s. He has sung for many famous Bollywood actors. These include Amitabh Bachchan, Aamir Khan, Shah Rukh Khan, and Salman Khan. He often sang duets with the singer Alka Yagnik.

He started his career in 1970 as a Maithili folk singer for Radio Nepal. He sang popular folk songs in Maithili and Nepali. After eight years, he moved to Bombay (now Mumbai) in India. He received a scholarship to study classical music there.

Udit Narayan began his Bollywood journey in 1980. Music director Rajesh Roshan noticed him and asked him to sing for the film Unees-Bees. He even got to sing with the legendary singer Mohammed Rafi. Later, he sang with Lata Mangeshkar in Bade Dil Wala (1983).

A big moment in his career was in 1988. He sang all the songs for the film Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak with Alka Yagnik. This work earned him a Filmfare Award. He continued to sing many hit songs in the 2000s for films like Lagaan, Devdas, and Veer-Zaara.

In 2002, he sang "Bairi Piya" with Shreya Ghoshal for the film Devdas. People said his singing captured the romantic feeling of the movie perfectly. His work has been praised by other famous singers and music directors. He is seen as one of the most important singers of his time.

Other Projects

Udit Narayan has also worked in Nepali films. In 1973, he sang a comedy song for the Nepali film Sindoor. He also acted in two Nepali films: Kusume Rumal and Pirati in 1985. Kusume Rumal became one of the biggest Nepali films ever.

In 2004, he released his first non-movie Nepali album called Upahaar. In this album, he sang duets with his wife, Deepa Jha. He has also released many solo albums with different types of songs.

Udit Narayan has performed in many live shows both in India and other countries. He has received many awards for his performances. In 2010, he sang for an English film called When Harry Tries to Marry. He also sang the title song for the TV show Yeh Duniyan Gazab Ki. In 2015, he was part of a huge project called Melancholy. In this project, 421 Nepali artists sang a long environmental song. This helped 365 artists set a Guinness World Record!

Television Appearances

Udit Narayan has also appeared on television as a judge. In 2007, he was a judge on Indian Idol 3 on Sony TV. He judged alongside music composer Anu Malik and singer Alisha Chinai.

He was also a judge on another Sony TV show called Waar Parriwar. This show was about families of singers competing. He judged with singer Kumar Sanu and Jatin Pandit. Udit Narayan has also been a guest on shows like Jo Jeeta Wohi Super Star and Sa Re Ga Ma Pa L'il Champs.
