Syed Hussain Jaun Asghar Naqvi, known as Jaun Elia (Urdu: جون ایلیا, born December 14, 1931 – died November 8, 2002), was a famous Urdu poet, thinker, and scholar. He was from South Asia and later moved to Pakistan.

Jaun Elia was very smart and knew many languages. These included Urdu, Arabic, English, Persian, Sanskrit, and Hebrew. He was known for his unique way of writing poetry. He studied many interesting subjects like philosophy, history, and different types of literature.

Jaun Elia's Early Life

Jaun Elia was born in Amroha, British India, on December 14, 1931. His full name was Syed Sibt-e-Ashgar Naqvi. His father, Shafiq Elia, was a scholar who knew a lot about literature and stars. He could speak Arabic, English, Persian, Hebrew, and Sanskrit.

Jaun Elia was the youngest child in his family. His older brother, Rais Amrohvi, was also a well-known writer. The famous Indian film director Kamal Amrohi was his first cousin.

Education and Beliefs

People said Jaun Elia was a child genius. He first went to school at the Syed-ul-Madaris in Amroha. This was a religious school called a madrassah. Even though his family followed Shia beliefs, the school was linked to a different Islamic group.

Jaun Elia believed in communism, which is a political idea about sharing wealth. Because of this, he was against the idea of India being divided into two countries. He felt that the division of India was not fair to ordinary people. However, he later moved to Karachi, Pakistan, in 1957.

A poet named Pirzada Qasim once said that Jaun Elia cared a lot about language. He used old styles of writing but wrote about new ideas. He always searched for something perfect in life. When he couldn't find it, he became frustrated.

Starting to Write

Jaun Elia started writing poems when he was only 8 years old. But he didn't publish his first book of poems, called Shayad, until he was 60.

In 1970, he married a writer named Zahida Hina. They later separated in 1992.
