Jay and Joy is a French company that makes vegan cheese. They were the first company in France to focus only on plant-based cheeses. Their products are made from things like Spanish almonds, cashew nuts, or sunflower seeds, mixed with spices. One of their most popular products is a cheese called Joséphine. It tastes a bit like camembert but is made from almonds and cashews.
The company makes its products in La Croix-Saint-Ouen, a town north of Paris. They sell their cheeses in stores and online across several European countries. Jay and Joy also has a special shop in the 11th arrondissement of Paris. It is called La crèmerie végétale, which means "The plant-based creamery." As of 2020, many of their customers buy their products because they cannot eat regular dairy. This is often due to lactose intolerance, not just because they are vegan.
In 2023, Jay and Joy had to recall all their products from stores. This happened after some people became sick. The illness was linked to eating Jay and Joy products. The company took this step to make sure everyone stayed safe.
Company History
How Jay and Joy Started
The company Jay and Joy began in Paris in 2014. It was started by Mary Iriarte Jähnke and her partner Eric Jähnke. Mary is from France and Venezuela, and Eric is from Germany. Both of them are vegan. Mary used to work in fashion. She also took lessons from a master cheesemaker. She believes in the traditional way of making cheese, even plant-based ones.
Growing and Expanding
Jay and Joy's first store partner was a French organic food chain called Biocoop. In 2018, they started selling their products in other countries. They began with Bio-Planet, an organic chain in Belgium. After that, they expanded their sales to the Netherlands and Germany. By September 2021, about 20% of the company's money came from sales in other countries.
The company first made its products in Paris. In 2019, they moved their production to La Croix, north of the capital. This move helped them make more cheese. Their production area grew from 60 to 450 square meters.
