Jaynagar Majilpur is a town and a municipality in the South 24 Parganas district of West Bengal, India. It's located in the southern part of Kolkata. This town is part of the larger Greater Kolkata region.

Jaynagar and Majilpur were once two separate towns. They became known as Jaynagar Majilpur after their municipality was formed. The town is famous for a sweet treat called Jaynagarer Moa.

The Story Behind the Name

Jaynagar is a very old town. Its name comes from a local goddess named Joychandi. The area was first called Joychanditala. Over time, this name changed to Joychandinagar and then simply Joynagar or Jaynagar.

Majilpur is another old settlement. Its name has an interesting origin. Long ago, the Ganges River used to flow through this area. But over time, the river started to fill up with silt. This process is called Moje Jaoa in Bengali. From this, the town got its name, Mojapur. Later, it became Mojpur, Mojipur, and finally Mojilpur or Majilpur.

A Glimpse into History

Many old towns and villages grew along the Bhagirathi channel. These include places like Kalighat, Baruipur, and Jaynagar. This happened from ancient times until about the 16th century.

An old poem from 1495, Manasavijaya by Bipradas Pipilai, mentions many places in this region. It tells how a merchant named Chand Sadagar traveled by boat through these areas. Chaitanyadeva, a famous saint, also used this route between 1486 and 1534. He stopped at villages near Baruipur and Chhatrabhog on his way to Puri. Chhatrabhog was an important river port back then.

Jaynagar Majilpur holds a special place in the history of Bengal. When Pratapaditya, the last independent Hindu king of Bengal, was defeated by the Mughal forces, some important families had to leave their homes. The family of the State Diwan (a high official) and the State Priest came to Jaynagar Majilpur. They settled here to stay safe and keep their traditions.

The town is also known for the ancient Dhanwantary Kali Temple. Many people believe the goddess Kali here is very kind and answers prayers. Every year, a special event called the Besher Mela is held. During this time, the goddess Kali is dressed up as Radha Krishna and other goddesses. Thousands of people visit this festival.

Another tradition is that during Kali Puja, every Brahmin family in the town used to host a Kali Puja. This was a huge festival with hundreds of houses celebrating. However, fewer houses celebrate it now. This is partly because many people have moved away. Also, younger generations are less involved, and it's harder to get money for the celebrations. Public celebrations, called Barowari Puja, have become more popular instead.

Before India became independent, Jaynagar Majilpur was very developed. It was even called Half-Calcutta. Important people like Sivanath Sastri and Umesh Chandra Dutta came from here. The town was also a center for freedom fighters like Kanailal Bhattacharya.
