Tuanku Ja'afar ibni Almarhum Tuanku Abdul Rahman (born 19 July 1922, died 27 December 2008) was a very important leader in Malaysia. He served as the tenth Yang di-Pertuan Agong of Malaysia, which is like being the King of the whole country. He was also the tenth Yang di-Pertuan Besar of Negeri Sembilan, a state in Malaysia. He held this role for a long time, from 1967 until his passing in 2008.

Early Life and Education
Tuanku Ja'afar was born in Klang, Selangor, which was part of British Malaya at the time. His father was Tuanku Abdul Rahman, who later became the first Yang di-Pertuan Agong of Malaysia.
He went to several schools in Malaysia, including the Malay College Kuala Kangsar. After finishing school, he continued his studies in the United Kingdom. He attended the University of Nottingham and the London School of Economics. During his time in the UK, he was very active in sports, especially badminton.
A Career in Diplomacy
After his studies, Tuanku Ja'afar joined the Malaysian civil service. He became a diplomat, which means he represented Malaysia in other countries. This was a very important job, as he helped build good relationships between Malaysia and other nations.
He served as an ambassador in several countries. For example, he was Malaysia's ambassador to Egypt in 1963. Later, he became the High Commissioner to Nigeria and Ghana in 1965. These roles allowed him to travel and learn about different cultures.
Becoming a Ruler
In 1967, Tuanku Ja'afar returned to Malaysia. His older brother, Tuanku Munawir, who was the ruler of Negeri Sembilan, passed away. Tuanku Ja'afar was then chosen to become the new ruler, known as the Yang di-Pertuan Besar of Negeri Sembilan. He was officially installed in this role in 1968.
He ruled Negeri Sembilan for many years, focusing on the well-being of his people. He was known for his wisdom and dedication to his state.
Yang di-Pertuan Agong of Malaysia
In 1994, Tuanku Ja'afar was elected as the tenth Yang di-Pertuan Agong of Malaysia. This is a special role where the rulers of different Malaysian states take turns being the head of the country. He served as the King of Malaysia for five years, from 1994 to 1999.
During his time as Yang di-Pertuan Agong, he represented Malaysia on the world stage. He met with many international leaders and helped promote Malaysia's interests. He was a respected figure both at home and abroad.
Family Life
Tuanku Ja'afar was married to Tuanku Najihah binti Almarhum Tunku Besar Burhanuddin. They had six children together: three sons and three daughters. His family was an important part of his life, and they often joined him during his diplomatic postings and royal duties.
Later Years and Legacy
After completing his term as Yang di-Pertuan Agong in 1999, Tuanku Ja'afar continued to serve as the Yang di-Pertuan Besar of Negeri Sembilan. He passed away on 27 December 2008, at the age of 86. He was buried at the Seri Menanti Royal Mausoleum in Negeri Sembilan.
Tuanku Ja'afar is remembered as a kind and dedicated leader. He played a significant role in Malaysia's history, both as a diplomat and as a beloved ruler. He was also known for his artistic talents, including painting.
