Early Life and Education
Sultan Salahuddin was born as Tengku Abdul Aziz Shah on March 8, 1926. His birthplace was the Istana Bandar Temasha in Jugra, Kuala Langat. He was the oldest son of Sultan Hisamuddin Alam Shah. His mother was Tengku Ampuan Raja Jemaah.
He started school in 1934 at Pengkalan Batu Malay School in Klang. Later, in 1936, he went to the Malay College Kuala Kangsar. He studied there until 1941, when World War II began. After the war, he traveled to England in 1947. He spent two years studying at the School of Oriental and African Studies in London.
When he returned from the United Kingdom, he worked for the government. He started as a trainee officer in the Selangor Survey Department. After that, he worked as an Inspector of Schools for eight years. In 1952, he took a short military course. He became a captain and later a major in the Malay Military Troop.
Sultan of Selangor
Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah took on royal duties early. He was named Tengku Laksamana of Selangor in 1946. Then, in 1950, he became the Raja Muda (Crown Prince) of Selangor.
When his father, Sultan Hisamuddin Alam Shah, passed away, Tengku Abdul Aziz Shah became the eighth Sultan of Selangor. This happened on September 3, 1960. He was officially installed as Sultan on June 28, 1961. His full title became Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah.

Important Decisions as Sultan
Sultan Salahuddin made a big decision in 1974. He signed an agreement to give Kuala Lumpur from Selangor to the Federal Government. This made Kuala Lumpur a Federal Territory. It is said that the Sultan was sad and cried after signing. He loved the city, but he did it for the good of all Malaysia. The Kota Darul Ehsan arch was built in 1981 to remember this event. It stands at the border of Kuala Lumpur and Selangor.
Sultan Salahuddin also helped create Shah Alam. This city became the new capital of Selangor in 1978. He believed Selangor needed a new, modern capital. Many buildings and roads in Shah Alam are named after him.
Yang di-Pertuan Agong
Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah was chosen as the eleventh Yang di-Pertuan Agong on April 26, 1999. He was installed on September 11, 1999. He was the second oldest ruler to be chosen for this role.
During his time as Yang di-Pertuan Agong, another area became a Federal Territory. This was Putrajaya, which was also part of Selangor. It became a Federal Territory in 2001. A main road in Putrajaya, Persiaran Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah, is named after him.
