Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin was born on 17 May 1943. He is the current Raja of Perlis, a state in Malaysia. He has been the Raja since the year 2000. Before that, he served as the twelfth Yang di-Pertuan Agong, who is the King of Malaysia. His time as King was from 2001 to 2006.

Early Life and Education
Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin was born in Arau, Perlis. He was the second of ten children. His parents were Raja Putra of Perlis and Raja Perempuan Budriah. He started his schooling at Arau Malay School.
In 1950, he moved to Penang for primary school. He attended Wellesley Primary School and then Westland Primary School until 1955. He began high school at Penang Free School in 1956. Later, he went to England to study at Wellingborough School until 1963. From 1964 to 1965, he trained to become an officer at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in England.
Military Career
After returning from England, Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin joined the Malaysian Ministry of Defence. His first job was as a second lieutenant in the Malaysian Reconnaissance Corps in 1965. He served in Sabah in 1966 and Sarawak in 1967.
He then worked in Pahang for several years. He left the military in 1969 to go back to Perlis. In 1967, he was promoted to lieutenant. In 1970, he rejoined the armed forces as a Captain in the Local Territorial Army. He was promoted to major in 1972. Today, he is a Colonel and leads Regiment 504 of the Army Reserve Unit.
Raja of Perlis
In October 1960, while still a student, he was named the Raja Muda (Crown Prince) of Perlis. He officially became the 12th Ruler of Perlis on 17 April 2000. This happened the day after his father, Putra of Perlis, passed away. His father had been the Raja since 1945 and was the longest-reigning monarch in the world at that time.
King of Malaysia (Yang di-Pertuan Agong)

Following the tradition of rotating kings in Malaysia, Sirajuddin was chosen as the 12th Yang di-Pertuan Agong. His term as King began on 13 December 2001. This happened sooner than expected. The previous King, Sultan Salahuddin of Selangor, passed away in November 2001.
Tuanku Sirajuddin became King very quickly after becoming the Raja of Perlis. His term as King of Malaysia ended on 12 December 2006.
Family Life and Interests
On 15 February 1967, he married Tuanku Tengku Fauziah in Kota Bharu, Kelantan. She became the Raja Puan Muda of Perlis. Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin served as the Regent of Perlis for the first time in 1967. This was when the Raja and Raja Perempuan of Perlis traveled abroad.
Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin has two children:
- His son, Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra, is the Raja Muda of Perlis. He was born on 30 December 1967.
- His daughter, Sharifah Fazira, was born on 5 June 1973.
He has traveled to many countries around the world. These include the United Kingdom, France, Germany, and Japan. Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin also enjoys sports. His favorite sports are golf, tennis, and football. He is a fan of the Tottenham Hotspur football club. He has been involved in many sports organizations in Perlis.
Community Involvement
Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin often connects with the people of Perlis. He leads many community groups and projects. He was the Chairman of the Association of Malaysian Ex-Servicemen, Perlis branch, for five years. He also chairs the Rayuan Derma Hari Pahlawan Negeri Perlis.
He cares deeply about education. In 1986, the Tuanku Syed Putra Foundation was created. This foundation helps many students from Perlis study in Malaysia and other countries. Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin is the Chairman of this foundation.
He is also involved in religious matters. He was appointed President of the Islamic Council of Perlis. He makes sure that religious affairs in the state follow the 'Ahlis Sunnah Waljamaah' teachings. He often meets with religious leaders in Perlis.

Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin holds high ranks in the Malaysian Armed Forces. He is a Marshal of the Royal Malaysian Air Force, Admiral of the Fleet in the Royal Malaysian Navy, and Field Marshal in the Malaysian Army. This is because he is the Supreme Commander of the Malaysian Armed Forces. He is also the Colonel-in-Chief of the Royal Ranger Regiment.
He has received many awards and honors from Perlis, other Malaysian states, and foreign countries. These awards recognize his leadership and service.
