Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin was born on January 22, 1962. He is the current Sultan of Terengganu, a state in Malaysia, and has been ruling since 1998. Before becoming Sultan, he also served as the King of Malaysia, known as the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, from 2006 to 2011.

Early Life and Education
Mizan Zainal Abidin was born in Kuala Terengganu. He is the oldest son of Sultan Mahmud and his second wife, Fatimah Sharifah Nong Alsagoff binti Abdillah. His mother's family has Arab roots.
He attended schools in Kuala Terengganu before studying overseas. He went to Geelong Grammar School in Australia. Later, in 1988, he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in International Relations from US International University-Europe in London.
Mizan also received military training. He completed a military course at the Army School of Languages from 1982 to 1983. After that, he attended the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in England, finishing as a cadet officer in December 1983.
Career Before Becoming Sultan
Before becoming Sultan, Tengku Mizan worked in government. In 1981, he was an Assistant Land Levy Collector in Kuala Terengganu for about a year.
After his military training, in 1988, he became a State Administrative Officer. He worked at the State Economic Planning Unit (UPEN) in Kuala Terengganu. He also served as an Assistant District Land Officer.
Becoming Sultan
Mizan was named the Yang di-Pertuan Muda of Terengganu in November 1979. He also served as the Regent of Terengganu for a short period in 1990.
From 1990 to 1995, he was the President of the Council for Islam and Malay Culture of Terengganu.
Mizan became the Sultan of Terengganu on May 15, 1998, after his father passed away. At that time, he was the youngest ruler of a Malaysian state. He was officially crowned as the 17th Sultan of Terengganu on March 4, 1999.
Chief Minister Appointment in 2008
In 2008, after a general election, there was a disagreement about who should be the Chief Minister (Menteri Besar) of Terengganu. The federal government suggested one person, but Sultan Mizan chose another, Ahmad Said.
This led to a public discussion. However, the Prime Minister and Sultan Mizan met and resolved the issue. The Prime Minister accepted the Sultan's choice for Chief Minister.
Deputy King of Malaysia
Mizan was appointed Deputy Yang di-Pertuan Agong (Deputy King of Malaysia) in April 1999. He served in this role until December 2001.
During this time, when the King, Sultan Salahuddin, was ill, Mizan acted as the Yang di-Pertuan Agong from October to December 2001.
He was re-appointed as Deputy Yang di-Pertuan Agong in December 2001. He held this position until he became the King himself.
Mizan also served as the first Chancellor of Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) from 2001 to 2006.
King of Malaysia (Yang di-Pertuan Agong)
On November 3, 2006, Mizan was chosen by the Conference of Rulers to become the 13th Yang di-Pertuan Agong, or King of Malaysia. His five-year term began on December 13, 2006. Malaysia has a unique system where the King is chosen from among the nine Malay Rulers for a five-year term.
Mizan was formally installed as the Yang di-Pertuan Agong on April 26, 2007. He completed his term as King in December 2011.
Marriage and Family
Mizan married Sultanah Nur Zahirah on March 28, 1996, in Kuala Terengganu.
They have four children:

- Tengku Muhammad Ismail, the Crown Prince (born March 1, 1998)
- Tengku Muhammad Mua′az (born December 22, 2000)
- Tengku Fatimatuz Zahra’ (born April 19, 2002)
When Sultan Mizan became the King of Malaysia, he appointed his son, Tengku Muhammad Ismail, as regent for Terengganu. At the time, Tengku Muhammad Ismail was only eight years old. Because of his young age, a special council was set up to help him carry out his duties.
Later, when Tengku Muhammad Ismail turned 13, he was old enough to take on his duties according to Islamic law. However, as he was studying away from Terengganu, another council was formed to perform the Regent's duties.
Sultan Mizan was a keen footballer when he was younger. Today, he enjoys golf, endurance riding (horse riding over long distances), and scuba diving. He also holds an Honorary 7th Degree Black Belt in Taekwondo.
Honours and Awards
Sultan Mizan has received many honours and awards from Terengganu, other Malaysian states, and other countries. These awards recognize his leadership and service.
He has also received an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from Queen's University Belfast in Northern Ireland.
