Jean Segura's Baseball Journey
Starting with the Angels
Jean Segura was born in San Juan, Dominican Republic. He joined the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in 2007 as a young international player.
He began his professional career in 2007 with the Dominican Summer Angels. This is a team for new players in the Dominican Summer League. He played very well, hitting for a high average and stealing many bases. In 2008, he played a few games but broke his left leg, which limited his season.
In 2009, Segura played for the Orem Owlz and briefly for the Salt Lake Bees. He continued to hit well and steal bases. His season was cut short again due to a broken finger.
The year 2010 was a great one for Segura with the Cedar Rapids Kernels. He led the league in stolen bases with 50 and also in hits. He hit 10 home runs and had many doubles and triples. He was recognized as an All-Star for his strong performance. In 2011, he moved up to the Inland Empire 66ers, but a hamstring injury kept him out for much of the season.
Segura was added to the Angels' main roster in November 2011. In 2012, he played for the Arkansas Travelers. He continued to show his speed, stealing 25 bases in his first 69 games. He was even chosen for the 2012 All-Star Futures Game, which features top young players. On July 24, 2012, he played his first game in Major League Baseball.
Playing for the Milwaukee Brewers
After just one game with the Angels, Jean Segura was traded to the Milwaukee Brewers in July 2012. This trade was part of a bigger deal for another player named Zack Greinke. Segura quickly joined the Brewers' main team in August.
During the offseason, Segura played in the Dominican Winter League. He won the batting title there, hitting for a .324 average. In 2013, he became the Brewers' starting shortstop. He was also selected as a reserve for the 2013 Major League Baseball All-Star Game. He had an excellent year, hitting .294 and stealing 44 bases, which was second-best in the National League. He also hit 12 home runs.
In 2014, Segura continued to play shortstop for the Brewers. He led all National League fielders in assists, showing his strong defense. In 2015, he stole 25 bases, which was fifth in the National League.
A Confusing Play: "Stealing First Base"
On April 19, 2013, Jean Segura was involved in a very unusual play. After hitting a single and stealing second base, he tried to steal first base! This happened because of a mix-up during a double steal attempt. He thought he was out and started heading to the dugout, which was near first base. His coach told him to stand on first, and the umpires said he was safe. However, baseball rules usually don't allow a player to go back to a base they've already passed. Later, MLB said the call was wrong, but it made for a memorable and confusing moment in baseball history.
Time with the Arizona Diamondbacks
On January 30, 2016, the Brewers traded Segura to the Arizona Diamondbacks. In 2016, he played most of his games at second base. He had an amazing season, hitting for a .319 average and leading the National League with 203 hits. He also hit 20 home runs and stole 33 bases. His performance was so good that he finished 13th in the voting for the National League's Most Valuable Player award.
Playing for the Seattle Mariners
On November 23, 2016, the Diamondbacks traded Segura to the Seattle Mariners. In June 2017, Segura signed a five-year contract with the Mariners. He returned to playing shortstop and finished the season hitting .300 with 22 stolen bases.
In 2018, Segura was chosen for the 2018 MLB All-Star Game again. During the game, he hit a big three-run home run. For the season, he hit .304, which was seventh-best in the American League. He also led all of Major League Baseball in singles and had 20 stolen bases. He was known for rarely striking out and for making good contact with the ball. Over his two years with the Mariners, he was one of the best shortstops in the league.
Joining the Philadelphia Phillies
On December 3, 2018, the Mariners traded Segura to the Philadelphia Phillies. He agreed to the trade, even though his contract had a clause that could have stopped it.
In 2019, Segura hit .280 with 12 home runs and 10 stolen bases. He was very good at making contact with pitches and rarely struck out. On defense, he led the league in errors, but he also helped turn many double plays.
In the shorter 2020 season, Segura continued to play well, hitting .266 with 7 home runs. In 2021, he hit .290 with 14 home runs and 9 stolen bases. He was a strong defensive second baseman, leading the National League in double plays.
In 2022, Segura had a finger injury that kept him out for a while. When he returned, he played shortstop. He finished the season hitting .277 with 10 home runs and 13 stolen bases. After the 2022 season, the Phillies decided not to keep him, and he became a free agent.
Final Years in MLB
On January 4, 2023, Segura signed a two-year contract with the Miami Marlins. He played 85 games for the Marlins, hitting three home runs. On August 1, 2023, he was traded to the Cleveland Guardians, but they released him right away.
In August 2024, Segura signed a minor league contract with the Baltimore Orioles. He played a few games for their Triple-A team, the Norfolk Tides, before being released in September.
After the 2024 season, Segura played winter league baseball for the Leones del Escogido in the Dominican Republic. He announced his retirement from professional baseball on May 21, 2025.
