Jean Tiberi (born 30 January 1935 – died 27 May 2025) was a French politician. He served as the Mayor of Paris, the capital city of France, from 1995 to 2001.

Early Life and Political Start

Jean Tiberi was born in Paris, France. His family had roots in Corsica, an island of France. He began his political career in August 1968. He became a member of the National Assembly, which is like the main parliament or law-making body of France. He took the place of René Capitant, who had been chosen for a government job.

Serving in the National Assembly

Tiberi was re-elected to the National Assembly in 1973. He served there until early 1976. At that time, he was appointed as a Secretary of State. This role meant he helped the main Minister of Agriculture with matters related to food industries. He held this position for a few months.

After this, he returned to the National Assembly in November 1976. He was re-elected in every election after that until 2012. This means he served many terms, showing his long commitment to public service.

Mayor of Paris and Local Government

Before becoming Mayor of Paris, Jean Tiberi was the Mayor of the 5th arrondissement of Paris. An arrondissement is like a district or a borough within a large city. He was the mayor of this district from March 1983 to May 1995.

Leading the Capital City

In May 1995, Jean Tiberi became the Mayor of Paris. This is a very important role, as Paris is a major global city. He served as the city's mayor until March 2001. After his time as Mayor of Paris, he was again elected as the Mayor of the 5th arrondissement in 2001. He continued in this role until 2014.

Challenges in Public Service

During his time in public office, some questions arose regarding how certain elections were managed. These issues involved Jean Tiberi and his wife, Xavière Tiberi.

Later Years and Legacy

Jean Tiberi was one of the longest-serving members of the National Assembly. He served for 10 terms, which is a total of 44 years. He decided not to run for re-election in 2012. Jean Tiberi passed away in Paris on 27 May 2025, at the age of 90.
