Exploring Grant Township Communities

Grant Township is home to a couple of interesting communities. These are known as unincorporated communities, which means they don't have their own separate local government like a city or village.

Blaine: A Historic Spot

  • Blaine is an unincorporated community found near the center of Grant Township. The first person to buy land here was Thomas S. Knapp in 1828. He built a sawmill, which is a place where logs are cut into lumber.
  • When Grant Township was officially created in 1866, it was named after Ulysses S Grant. He was a famous general during the American Civil War and later became a U.S. President.
  • The settlement was first called Grant Center. However, there was already another place in Michigan with that name. So, the community asked to be renamed Blaine. This new name honored James G. Blaine, a well-known Republican U.S. Senator. Blaine had a post office, which is where mail is handled, from November 1879 until December 1960.

Jeddo: From Potter's Corners

  • Jeddo is another unincorporated community, located in the northern part of the township. It was first known as "Potter's Corners" because of an early settler named A.S. Potter.
  • In February 1859, a post office opened here and was called "Pottersburg." Later, in July 1864, its name was changed to Jeddo.
  • The ZIP code for Jeddo (48032) covers all of Grant Township. It also includes parts of nearby Fremont and Worth townships in Sanilac County, and a small part of Burtchville Township. A ZIP code helps the postal service deliver mail correctly.
