Jeevan Mendis (born on January 15, 1983) is a former professional cricket player from Sri Lanka. He was known as an all-rounder, meaning he was good at both batting and bowling. Jeevan bowled leg spin, a type of bowling where the ball spins away from a right-handed batsman.

He played for the Sri Lankan national team in shorter cricket games, like One Day Internationals (ODIs) and Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is). He even played in big tournaments like the 2012 World Twenty20 and the 2015 World Cup. In Sri Lanka, he played for the Tamil Union. He also played for Derbyshire in England in 2017. Jeevan Mendis stopped playing international cricket on December 28, 2021, and later moved to Australia.

Early Cricket Days

Jeevan Mendis was born in Colombo, a city in Sri Lanka. He went to school at S. Thomas' College, Mount Lavinia. He started playing cricket in the 2000-2001 season. The next year, he was the captain of the Under-19 team that won a one-day game.

He also played for the Sri Lankan A team in 2005. Jeevan once held a record for the best bowling figures in the U19 Cricket World Cup. He took 7 wickets for only 20 runs against the Zimbabwe Under-19 team. This was a special achievement, as he is the only Sri Lankan to take 7 wickets in an Under-19 match.

Playing for Clubs

Jeevan Mendis played for many different cricket clubs throughout his career.

Sri Lankan Clubs

He made his first Twenty20 appearance on August 17, 2004, playing for Sinhalese Sports Club. Since the 2008-2009 season, he has played for Tamil Union in Sri Lankan domestic cricket.

Playing Overseas

During the first half of the 2017 season, Jeevan Mendis played for Derbyshire in England. He was an "overseas player," which means he was a player from another country.

Jeevan Mendis started playing for the Sri Lankan national team on June 1, 2010. His first international match was against Zimbabwe in the 2010 Zimbabwe Tri-Nation Series. In that game, he took two wickets and gave away only 12 runs. In his second match, against India, he scored 35 runs without being out, helping Sri Lanka win. He also took two wickets in the final against Zimbabwe, which Sri Lanka won.

World Cup Appearances

In the opening match of the 2012 ICC World Twenty20 against Zimbabwe, Jeevan scored 43 runs from 30 balls. He helped his team reach a high score by partnering with Kumar Sangakkara. With the ball, he took 3 wickets for 24 runs.

On August 4, 2012, he scored his highest ODI score of 72 runs against India. Later that year, on November 10, 2012, he had his best ODI bowling figures, taking 3 wickets for only 15 runs against New Zealand. Sri Lanka won that match, and Jeevan was named the man of the match.

After not playing international cricket for three years, Jeevan Mendis was chosen to play in a Twenty20 International series against Bangladesh in February 2018. He played his comeback match on February 15, 2018, and took two wickets. Sri Lanka won that match.

In April 2019, he was selected for Sri Lanka's team for the 2019 Cricket World Cup. After the World Cup, he was not chosen for the team again.
