What's in a Name? The Story of Jenesano
When Jenesano was first founded, it had a different name: Piranguata. In 1833, its name was changed to Genazzano. This new name came from a province in Italy. Later on, the name changed again to Jenesano. This name means "healthy people" or "healthy village," which sounds like a nice place to live!
A Look Back: Jenesano's History
Before the Spanish arrived, the area where Jenesano is now was home to the Muisca people. The Muisca were an important group of people in ancient Colombia. They lived in a loose group of communities called the Muisca Confederation. Jenesano was part of the land ruled by the zaque, who was the leader of Hunza.
The modern town of Jenesano was officially started much later, in 1828. This happened after Colombia gained its independence from the Spanish Empire.
