Jenks Academy for the Arts and Sciences is a public school for students from kindergarten through eighth grade. It is located in the Chestnut Hill part of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. This school is part of the School District of Philadelphia.
About 600 students attend Jenks Academy. There are two classes for each grade level. The school also has special programs. These programs help students with life skills, learning support, and gifted support. All students at Jenks are required to wear school uniforms.

The Story of Jenks School
The school building was first built in 1922. It was originally known as the John Story Jenks School. The building has a special design style. It looks like an old, grand building, almost like a castle. This style is called Tudor Revival or Late Gothic Revival.
The building is made of yellow brick. It has many fancy decorations. There is a decorative wall at the top called a parapet. It also has a unique roof shape called a Flemish gable. Irwin T. Catharine designed the school. He was an architect for the school district for a long time. The company Cramp & Co. built the school.
Because of its special design and history, the building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1988. This list helps protect important buildings across the country.
Who Was John Story Jenks?
The school was named after John Story Jenks (1839-1923). He was a successful businessman. He worked with a company called Randolph and Jenks. Mr. Jenks was also a leader in many important organizations. These included the Pennsylvania Hospital and the Insurance Company of North America.
He was a member of several historical groups. These included the Union League and the Historical Society of Pennsylvania. He also belonged to the American Philosophical Society. His home, Inglewood Cottage, is also in Chestnut Hill.
John Story Jenks served on the Philadelphia Board of Education. He loved collecting coins. A person who collects coins is called a numismatist. He believed that collecting coins was a great way for young people to learn. He thought it helped with geography, history, and even languages.
A New Name for a New Focus
In 2014, the school's name was changed. It became Jenks Academy for the Arts and Sciences. This change happened because the school started to focus more on STEM subjects. STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. The new name shows the school's commitment to these important areas.

Where Jenks Students Go Next
After finishing eighth grade at Jenks, students usually go to Roxborough High School. Before Roxborough High, students from Jenks used to go to Germantown High School. However, Germantown High School is now closed.
