Early Life and Education
Jeremy Cumpston was born in Darwin, Australia, around 1967. His parents were Noelene and Trevor Cumpston. His mother, Noelene, had Afghan-Aboriginal heritage from the Barkandji people. Her father was a white Australian doctor.
Jeremy's father, Trevor, was a radiographer. He worked in Darwin, helping to check for tuberculosis in Aboriginal communities. Jeremy was born three and a half years after his sister, Nici Cumpston, who is now a famous art photographer.
Moving to Canada
The Cumpston family later moved to Canada. Jeremy's father worked as a hospital manager in a small town. When Jeremy was eight, they briefly returned to Australia. Then they went back to Canada. This time, his father worked at a hospital near a very large nickel mine.
At age 11, Jeremy and his family, including his four sisters, moved back to South Australia. After finishing high school, he decided to study medicine. Even though he loved drama, he chose a medical career.
Studying Medicine and Acting
While studying medicine, Jeremy was still interested in acting. He tried out for the Victorian College of the Arts (VCA) and was accepted. However, he could not delay his medical internship, so he had to give up his spot at the VCA.
After his internship at Wollongong Hospital and Prince Henry Hospital in Sydney, Jeremy took acting classes. He studied at the Actors Centre Australia. Famous actors like Hugh Jackman and Jason Clarke were in his classes.
He worked as a general doctor for some time. Then, he moved to Perth to study acting full-time for three years. He attended the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA).
Career Highlights
In 1995, during his last year at WAAPA, Jeremy worked as a full-time doctor for six weeks. He saved money to produce and act in a play called Shadow Boxing. He performed it in Adelaide and later in Perth. This play was the first one from the Tamarama Rock Surfers theatre company. He started this company in 1994 with Michael Gwynne and his sister Zena Cumpston.
Acting Roles
After graduating, Jeremy found an agent. This led to a role in the Sydney Theatre Company's 1996 musical Miracle City. It was directed by Gale Edwards. Next, he played the main role in Romeo and Juliet for the New England Theatre Company. He then played Mercutio in another Romeo and Juliet show in the Sydney Botanic Gardens.
In 1997, Jeremy helped start the Old Fitzroy Theatre with the Tamarama Rock Surfers. This group continued to create plays until 2015.
Jeremy also worked at an Aboriginal medical center in Sydney. At the same time, he kept auditioning for TV shows. He had guest roles in Murder Call and Roar. He produced and acted in Road, the first Sydney project for Tamarama Rock Surfers. He also directed Three Strikes, which was very popular.
Television and Film Work
From 1998 to 2001, Jeremy played Nurse Connor Costello in the TV drama All Saints. His character was known as a "lovable rogue." While on the show, Jeremy continued his medical work. He wrote a medical column for a magazine and worked at a clinic on Saturdays.
Jeremy also directed several short films. These include Free (2003), The Sky is Always Beautiful (2007), and The Last Race (2011).
In 2019, Jeremy directed the movie Bilched. His son, Hal Cumpston, wrote the film. Bilched was shown in cinemas across Australia. It won several awards at the 2019 Chelsea Film Festival. These awards included Best Screenplay, Best Supporting Actor, and Best Feature Film.
