Jeroen Willem Boere (born November 18, 1967 – died August 16, 2007) was a Dutch professional footballer. He played as a striker, which means his main job was to score goals. Jeroen was the younger brother of another football player, Remco Boere. Jeroen started his professional career at SBV Excelsior in the Netherlands. He went on to play for several teams, mostly in Holland's second-highest league, the Eerste Divisie.

Playing Football in England

Jeroen Boere was a tall striker. In the summer of 1993, he moved to England. He joined West Ham United, a team that had just been promoted to the Premier League. The club paid £250,000 to sign him.

Debut and Challenges

Jeroen, who his teammates called 'Yosser', played his first game for West Ham on September 25, 1993. It was a match against Newcastle United, which West Ham lost 2–0. Jeroen was sent off the field during this game after a clash with an opposing player.

He found it hard to get a regular spot in West Ham's main team. However, he had a memorable moment on December 10, 1994. He scored two goals in a Premier League game against Leeds United at Elland Road. His goals helped West Ham get a 2–2 draw.

Loan Spells and Later Clubs

Jeroen stayed with West Ham for two seasons. During this time, he was loaned out to other clubs like Portsmouth and West Bromwich Albion. West Ham called him back when they needed more strikers. He teamed up with Tony Cottee, and together they helped West Ham avoid being moved down to a lower league that season.

In 1995, Jeroen moved to Crystal Palace. This was part of a deal that saw another player, Iain Dowie, go to West Ham. His time at Crystal Palace was short. He then joined Southend United at the end of that season.

Playing Football in Japan

In 1998, Boere moved to Japan. He joined a new professional club called Omiya Ardija, which used to be known as NTT Kantō. This team played in the Japan Football League. In his first season in Japan, he played 15 matches and scored 9 goals.

Career-Ending Injury

In the 1999 season, Omiya Ardija joined the new J2 League. Jeroen started the season very well, scoring 9 goals in 11 games. However, in May 1999, something terrible happened. After having dinner with his wife in Tokyo, he was attacked by two unknown men. He was stabbed in his left eye and arm.

This injury was very serious. Jeroen lost his eye because of the attack. This meant he had to stop playing football when he was only 31 years old.

Life After Football

After he stopped playing football, Jeroen Boere became a pub owner. He owned the Half Moon pub in Epping High Street from 1999 until 2004.

In 2001, he gave an interview to a Dutch sports magazine at his pub. He talked about his artificial eye and said he had no regrets about his football career. He was proud to have played for teams like West Ham United. He also said he was just happy to be alive. After selling his pub, Jeroen moved to Spain in September 2004. There, he started working as a real estate agent, helping people buy and sell homes.

His Passing

Jeroen Boere passed away on August 16, 2007, at the age of 39. There were different reports about how and where he died. Some news sources said he died in a car crash, possibly on Ibiza. Other reports said he was found dead at his home in Marbella, Spain. Jeroen left behind his wife and child, as well as two sons from a previous marriage.

To honor his memory, players from West Ham United, Southend United, and Omiya Ardija wore black armbands during their home games in August 2007.
