RB Ōmiya Ardija (RB大宮アルディージャ, Arubi Ōmiya Arudīja) is a professional soccer club from Japan. The team is based in Ōmiya, a part of Saitama City. They share their hometown with their rivals, the Urawa Red Diamonds.

The team currently plays in the J2 League, which is the second-highest level of professional soccer in Japan. They were promoted to this league in 2024.

Until late 2024, the club was called Ōmiya Ardija. It was then bought by the company Red Bull GmbH, which gave the team its new name.

The original logo for Ōmiya Ardija had a squirrel on it. The squirrel is the official animal of the Ōmiya area. The name "Ardija" comes from the Spanish word ardilla, which means squirrel. The team's old nickname was "Risu," the Japanese word for squirrel.

In November 2024, after Red Bull GmbH bought the team, the name was changed to RB Ōmiya Ardija. The club also got a new logo, which looks similar to the logos of other soccer teams owned by Red Bull around the world.

Club History

Early Years

The team was started in 1968 as the NTT Saitama Soccer Selection. A year later, it became the NTT Kantō Soccer Club. In 1987, the team was promoted to the second division of the Japan Soccer League. When that league ended, they joined the former Japan Football League.

In 1998, the club became a professional team to join the new J. League. This is when they took the name Ōmiya Ardija. Games against their local rivals, the Urawa Red Diamonds, are known as the "Saitama derby".

Ups and Downs

Ōmiya Ardija has moved between Japan's top soccer leagues. They played in the top league, the J1 League, from 2005 to 2014. After being relegated (moved down) to the J2 League, they won the J2 championship in 2015 and were immediately promoted back to J1.

However, they were relegated again after the 2017 season. In 2023, after a tough season, the team was relegated from the J2 League to the J3 League. This was the first time they played in the third division of Japanese professional soccer.

A New Chapter with Red Bull

In 2024, big news was announced. The Austrian company Red Bull GmbH, famous for its energy drinks and for owning other sports teams, bought Ōmiya Ardija. This was a major event, as it was the first time a foreign company became the only owner of a major Japanese professional sports team.

Red Bull owns several other soccer clubs, including RB Leipzig in Germany and the New York Red Bulls in the United States.

With new ownership, the team had a great season. On October 13, 2024, Ōmiya won promotion back to the J2 League. Just a week later, they became the champions of the J3 League.

Stadium and Mascots

NACK5 Stadium Ōmiya, the club's home field.

The club's home stadium is the NACK5 Stadium Ōmiya. It is located in a park that is also home to many squirrels, which inspired the team's original name.

Ōmiya Ardija has two squirrel mascots named Ardi and Miya. They both wear the team's uniform and cheer for the players during games.
