History of Jerseytown
The land where Jerseytown is located was first purchased in 1785. This happened shortly after the American Revolutionary War ended. The Welliver family bought the land.
Later, in 1826, a tannery was built in Jerseytown. A tannery is a place where animal hides are turned into leather. Today, Jerseytown remains a rural area. It has a small population.
Geography and Location
Jerseytown is found in the western part of Columbia County, Pennsylvania. It is near the center of Madison Township. The area covers about 1.9 square kilometers (0.73 square miles). Almost all of this area is land.
Roads and Travel
Two important state roads serve Jerseytown. These are Route 44 and Route 254.
- Route 44 goes northeast about 3.5 miles to Millville. It also goes southwest about 16 miles to Milton.
- Route 254 travels southeast about 10 miles to Bloomsburg. Bloomsburg is the main town in Columbia County. Route 254 also goes northwest/west about 11 miles to Turbotville.
