Millville is a small town, called a borough, located in Columbia County, Pennsylvania, in the United States. It's part of a larger area known as Northeastern Pennsylvania. In 2023, about 984 people lived there. Millville is also part of the Bloomsburg-Berwick micropolitan area, which means it's connected to nearby towns and cities.

History

Early Settlers and Land

The story of Millville began around 1770 when a man named John Eves, who was from Ireland, visited the area. He explored the Greenwood Valley and Little Fishing Creek region. Some stories say he bought a large piece of land from the Native Americans who guided him.

John Eves went back to Delaware but returned in 1771 with his son, Thomas. They built a log cabin. The whole Eves family moved there in 1772 and started farming the land they had cleared.

In 1774, the Eves family officially received a deed for their land. It was a huge property, about 1,203-acre (4.87 km2), making it the largest land holding in what would later become Columbia County.

Challenges and Rebuilding

In 1778, there was an Indian uprising called the Battle of Wyoming. This forced the Eves family to leave their home. They found safety in a stockade (a fort made of strong posts) near Washingtonville.

When they returned in 1785, their cabin was burned, and their fields were overgrown. But they were determined to rebuild their home and community.

Community Growth and Industry

After returning, the Eves family was joined by several other families. John Eves, who had many children and grandchildren, helped build homes for everyone. He also built a gristmill (for grinding grain) that lasted 100 years. Later, a sawmill and other important buildings were added.

Millville grew slowly at first because it wasn't on a main road or near a big river. Until 1798, the only ways to get there were Indian trails. A road was built in 1798, but it wasn't until 1856 that a major road from Bloomsburg to Laporte passed through Millville.

Early residents were mostly self-sufficient, meaning they made or grew most of what they needed. Thomas Eves took over the grist mill from his father. The first store in the area opened in 1827, run by David and Andrew Eves. David Eves also became the first postmaster in 1831.

Education and Local Businesses

Even in the early days, people made sure there were places for worship and education. Services and classes were held in homes. In 1785, a school started in Millville. A two-room meeting house was built in 1795.

Local businesses focused on what the community needed. Sawmills and grist mills were first. Then came a woolen mill in 1813, several brick factories, and a wagon shop in 1837.

Millville saw a boost in growth in 1856 when the road from Bloomsburg to Laporte was finished. This road made it easier for the town to connect with markets and transportation in Bloomsburg. Another big growth period happened in 1887 when the railroad came through town. Many new businesses and buildings appeared to serve the railroad. A local newspaper, the Weekly Tablet, started publishing in April 1887.

Geography

Millville is located in the northwestern part of Columbia County. It sits on the east side of Little Fishing Creek. This creek flows south and joins Fishing Creek near the Susquehanna River in Bloomsburg.

The borough has a total area of about 1.0 square mile (2.6 km2). Only a tiny part, about 0.008 square miles (0.02 km2), is water. Millville is surrounded by Greenwood Township to the north, east, and south. Across Little Fishing Creek, to the southwest, is Madison Township. To the northwest, also across the creek, is Pine Township. A small community called Iola is just north of Millville in Greenwood Township.

Millville is served by two main roads: Pennsylvania Route 42 and Pennsylvania Route 254. PA 42 goes north about 27 miles (43 km) to Laporte and south about 10 miles (16 km) to Bloomsburg, which is the county seat. PA 254 goes east about 6 miles (10 km) to Rohrsburg and southwest about 4 miles (6 km) to Jerseytown.
