Jesmond Dene is a small community in San Diego County, California. It is not a city with its own government. Instead, it is part of a larger area. This community is located near Escondido. It sits just east of Interstate 15. Jesmond Dene has a ZIP Code of 92026. This ZIP Code is also used for Escondido. The area uses telephone area code 760. The community got its name from a park called Jesmond Dene in Newcastle upon Tyne, England.

History of Jesmond Dene

Jesmond Dene started as a new neighborhood in the 1920s. It was part of the growing city of Escondido. The W. F. Moore company created this new area in 1926. They invested US$50,000 to build it. The neighborhood covered about 160 acres. It was located in Moosa Canyon.

Early Features and Fun

The new neighborhood had many fun things for people to do. There were tennis courts for playing sports. A dance hall was built for parties and events. People could also play horseshoe games. A local creek was blocked to create a swimming pool. All these fun places were free to use. This was true for anyone who built a home there. The neighborhood had 750 plots of land. Each plot was 80 by 100 feet. The grand opening of Jesmond Dene was on November 14, 1926.

Post Office and Gateposts

A post office opened in Jesmond Dene on February 16, 1933. But it did not stay open for long. It closed on January 31, 1935. Then, it was moved to Escondido. For many years, tall stone gateposts marked the entrance. They were on Jesmond Dene Road. This road was first called Jesmond Drive. The county later removed these gateposts. They were taken down because they had become old and damaged.

Changes Over Time

The quality of Jesmond Dene went down after some time. This was partly due to problems with land deeds. The Great Depression also affected the area. The Jesmond Dene Clubhouse closed after several years. It was then only used for small, private events. Henry and Ida Zilz bought the clubhouse in 1945. They also managed the Jesmond Dene Water Co. for a while. Later, the area joined the Valley Center Municipal Water District. The old clubhouse was split into two businesses. It became a grocery store and a tavern.

In the late 1950s, the Fraternal Order of Eagles bought the building. They turned it into their Aerie 2175 meeting place. The Loyal Order of Moose bought it in the 1960s. This organization still uses the building today.
