Jiří Jarošík (born on 27 October 1977) is a Czech professional football manager and a former player. He is currently the manager of the Kazakhstani club Shakhter Karagandy. During his time as a player, he was a defender and a midfielder.

Jarošík began his football journey in the Czech Republic. He won six league titles in seven years with Sparta Prague. Later, he played for CSKA Moscow and won a Russian Premier League title in 2003. In January 2005, he moved to Chelsea in England, where he won a Premier League title. He was also loaned to Birmingham City in the same league.

He also won the Scottish Premier League with Celtic in the 2006–07 season. Later in his career, he returned to Russia with Krylia Sovetov. He also had a second time playing for Sparta Prague and played in Spain for Real Zaragoza and Deportivo Alavés. Jarošík played for the Czech national team 23 times between 2000 and 2005. Since 2020, he has been working as a football manager in the Czech Republic, Slovenia, and Russia.

Club Career Highlights

Starting Out in Czech Republic

Jiří Jarošík was born in Ústí nad Labem, which was then part of Czechoslovakia. He started his football career with Sparta Prague in his home country. He spent two years on loan at Slovan Liberec before becoming a regular player for Sparta.

His strong performances caught the attention of CSKA Moscow. They paid around $3.5 million to sign him in 2003, which was a record amount for a transfer in Russia at that time. On 10 August 2004, Jarošík scored an important goal for CSKA Moscow. It was the winning goal in a 2–1 home victory against Rangers in a UEFA Champions League qualifying match.

Time at Chelsea

On 6 January 2005, Jarošík joined the Premier League club Chelsea. He made his first appearance just two days later in an FA Cup match against Scunthorpe United. Chelsea won the game 3–1.

On 27 February, he started in the League Cup final, which Chelsea won 3–2 against Liverpool. Chelsea also won the Premier League title in the 2004–05 season. Jarošík played in 14 league games, which was enough for him to earn a championship medal.

Loan to Birmingham City

On 22 August 2005, Jarošík was loaned to another Premier League team, Birmingham City, for the rest of the season. He had not played many games for Chelsea, and his chances of playing more had decreased. The manager of Birmingham City, Steve Bruce, praised Jarošík as a strong and adaptable player.

He made his debut for Birmingham City the next day. On 27 August, he scored his first goal for the club in a 3–2 win against West Bromwich Albion. On 4 April 2006, Jarošík scored the only goal in a game against Bolton. His long-range shot helped Birmingham move out of the relegation zone. He returned to Chelsea after Birmingham City was relegated from the Premier League.

Success with Celtic

On 19 June 2006, Jarošík left Chelsea and signed a three-year contract with Scottish Premier League champions Celtic. He scored in his first game for Celtic in a 4–1 win over Kilmarnock on 29 July. Even though there was a lot of competition for midfield spots, Jarošík still helped Celtic achieve success.

He won two free kicks that led to goals by Shunsuke Nakamura in UEFA Champions League matches against Manchester United. These goals helped Celtic reach the knockout stage of the Champions League. On 6 December 2006, Jarošík also scored Celtic's goal in a Champions League group stage loss to Copenhagen.

On 14 January 2007, he scored the winning goal in a 2–1 victory over Hearts with a powerful shot from far away. Celtic won the league title in Jarošík's first season. This meant he had won league medals in a record four different countries: the Czech Republic, Russia, England, and Scotland.

Even with new players joining in the 2007–08 season, Jarošík stayed with Celtic. On 3 October, he started his first Celtic game in over six months in a Champions League victory against A.C. Milan. On 28 November, Jarošík scored Celtic's equalizing goal in another Champions League match against Shakhtar Donetsk. The game ended 2–1 to Celtic. In July 2023, Jarošík shared his strong opinions about Scottish football compared to English football.

Return to Russia and Spain

On 31 January 2008, Jarošík signed with the Russian club Krylia Sovetov. After his contract ended in December 2009, Jarošík trained with his old club Sparta Prague. He then learned about interest from the La Liga club Real Zaragoza in Spain.

On 13 January 2010, Jarošík joined Zaragoza on a free transfer. He signed an 18-month deal. In his first game four days later, the team drew 0–0. His first goal for Zaragoza was a header from a corner kick in a 1–1 draw with Atlético Madrid.

On 2 October 2010, Jarošík was sent off in a game against Sporting de Gijón. He returned to Sparta Prague on 13 August 2011 as a free agent. On 26 August 2013, Jarošík signed with Deportivo Alavés, a team that had just been promoted to Spain's Segunda División.

International Career

Jiří Jarošík played for the Czech Republic national team 23 times between 2000 and 2005. He did not score any goals for the national team. He was not chosen for the squad that played in Euro 2004. His first game for the Czech Republic was on 16 August 2000. He came on as a substitute in a friendly match against Slovenia in Ostrava.

Coaching Career

On 15 July 2020, Jiří Jarošík, at 42 years old, took on his first job as a head coach. He joined his hometown club Ústí nad Labem. He signed a one-year contract with a chance to extend it. On 25 December, he moved to Celje, the defending champions of the Slovenian PrvaLiga.

After winning one game and drawing two out of eleven matches, he was dismissed on 26 April 2021. After starting the season with Prostějov, Jarošík moved to Teplice in the Czech top league in September 2021. He and his team were dismissed on 4 March 2023, after losing five out of six games.

On 22 June 2023, Jarošík was hired by the Russian Premier League club Orenburg. However, after only two months and five league matches, he left Orenburg due to family reasons. On 5 November 2024, Jarošík was appointed as the manager for the Kazakhstan Premier League club Shakhter Karagandy.
