History of Jibacoa
Jibacoa village was started in 1961. This was soon after the Cuban Revolution. The name Jibacoa comes from the Arawak language. Many other places in the area, like Manicaragua, also have Arawak names.
Geography of the Village
Location and Surroundings
Jibacoa is a hilltown, which means it is a town built on hills. It is surrounded by the beautiful Escambray Mountains. The village is close to the southeastern side of the Hanabanilla Lake. You can also find the Jibacoa Dam (Presa Jibacoa) nearby. Another resort village, El Salto del Hanabanilla, is about 39 kilometers away.
The Jibacoa River flows to the east of the village. Next to the river is a karst cave called Cueva del Guanajo. Karst caves are formed when water dissolves rock, creating unique shapes.

There is also a smaller mountain road, 10 kilometers long. It links Jibacoa to the village of Güinía de Miranda. Jibacoa is about 46 kilometers from Cumanayagua. It is 74 kilometers from Cienfuegos and 76 kilometers from Santa Clara.
