Manicaragua is a town and a municipality located in the Villa Clara Province of Cuba. It is found in the Escambray Mountains, which are in the southern part of Villa Clara. The municipality shares borders with the Cienfuegos Province to the west and the Sancti Spíritus Province to the east.

History of Manicaragua

The area where Manicaragua is located was first settled by the Ciboney people. They were a group of Taíno people who lived in Cuba long ago. Some of the names of places in the municipality, like Manicaragua itself, Mataguá, and Jibacoa, come from the Arawak language, which was spoken by these early inhabitants.

The municipality of Manicaragua includes the main town and several smaller villages. Some of these villages are Arroyo Seco, El Mango, El Salto del Hanabanilla, Güinía de Miranda, Jibacoa, Jorobada, La Moza, and Mataguá. Mataguá is the most populated village in the area.

Manicaragua is known for its beautiful natural areas. These include the lovely Valley of Jibacoa and the Hanabanilla Lake. There is also a dam and a hotel with the same name, Hanabanilla.

Population Facts

In 2004, the municipality of Manicaragua had a population of about 73,370 people. The total area of the municipality is about 1,063 square kilometers (410 square miles). This means there were about 69 people living in each square kilometer. By 2022, the population had changed to 61,445 people.

Manicaragua's Economy and Crops

Manicaragua is one of the four largest municipalities in Cuba. The main crops grown here are tobacco and coffee. These crops are very important for the income of the area.

Coffee is grown on the slopes of the Escambray Mountains. This mountain range stretches from the southeastern part of the Cienfuegos Province to the nearby Sancti Spíritus Province. Coffee beans from Manicaragua are known for their special flavor.

Cigars made in the local factory are also very popular. Many tourists from around the world enjoy them. El Hoyo de Manicaragua is a small village in this municipality. It was once famous for having the best tobacco in the world. However, the main tobacco growing was later moved to the Pinar del Río Province in western Cuba.
