What is Jilakin Rock?

Jilakin Rock is a special type of rock formation called an inselberg. This means it's like an "island mountain" that rises suddenly from a flat plain. It's found in the southwestern part of a very old piece of Earth's crust called the Yilgarn Craton.

History of the Area

The nearby town of Kulin was first named Jilakin in 1913. However, its name was changed to Kulin in 1914 when the railway line reached the town.

If you visit Jilakin Rock, you'll find a parking area and picnic tables at the bottom. It's a great spot for a day trip, but you can't camp there overnight.

Special Trees at Jilakin Rock

At the base of Jilakin Rock, there's a unique group of jarrah trees. These jarrah trees are the most isolated natural group known! They grow about 150 kilometers (93 miles) east of where most jarrah trees are found. They survive by using water that runs off the rock and collects in the soil nearby.

Because these trees are so special, the area was made an "A Class Reserve" in 1914. This meant that no one was allowed to cut down the trees. Other plants growing on the eastern side of the rock include different types of eucalyptus trees, like Eucalyptus transcontinentalis, Eucalyptus subangusta, Eucalyptus salmonophloia (also known as salmon gum), and Eucalyptus salubris (gimlet).

Noongar Stories and Beliefs

The Noongar people, who are the traditional owners of this land, have a special story about the jarrah trees at Jilakin Rock. They believe the trees grew when two groups of Aboriginal people met and pushed their spears into the ground as a sign of friendship. The spears then sprouted and grew into the jarrah trees you see today.

Jilakin Rock is also part of a Dreaming trail. This is a very important spiritual path that stretches from the south coast near Augusta all the way to the Great Victoria Desert in the northeast. Other famous places along this trail include Mulka's Cave, Wave Rock, Puntapin Rock, Jitarning Rock, and Dumbleyung Lake.

Blazing Swan Event

The area around Jilakin Rock is also home to an annual event called the Blazing Swan. This event is inspired by the famous Burning Man festival. It has been held near Jilakin Rock every Easter since 2014. Around 2,500 people attend this unique gathering each year.
