James "Jim" Hearn (born April 11, 1921 – died June 10, 1998) was an American professional baseball player. He was a pitcher in Major League Baseball (MLB) for 13 seasons, from 1947 to 1959. Jim was a right-handed pitcher, standing about 6 feet 3 inches tall and weighing around 205 pounds.
Jim Hearn's Baseball Career
Jim Hearn was born in Atlanta, Georgia. He went to Georgia Tech before signing with the St. Louis Cardinals in 1942. He played in the minor leagues for two years. Then, he served in the United States Army during World War II for three years.
After his military service, Jim joined the Cardinals in 1947. He played for them for parts of four seasons. In July 1950, he moved to the New York Giants. That year, he had an amazing season. He led the National League with a low earned run average (2.49). He also won 11 out of 14 games he pitched for the Giants.
Key Moments with the Giants
In 1951, Jim was a key pitcher for the Giants. He won 17 games that season. The team made an incredible comeback, winning the National League pennant. They were 13 and a half games behind the Brooklyn Dodgers in August. But they caught up and won!
Jim helped the Giants win the pennant by beating the Dodgers 3–1 in Game 1 of the playoff. Later, in the 1951 World Series, he pitched against the New York Yankees. He won his only start in Game 3, helping the Giants win 6–2. He allowed only one earned run in the entire World Series. This gave him a very low ERA of 1.04 in the Fall Classic.
Jim continued to pitch for the Giants for five more seasons. After 1956, he was traded to the Philadelphia Phillies. There, he mostly pitched as a relief pitcher, coming into games after the starting pitcher. His last game was in May 1959. He left the team shortly after.
