Jim Rogers, born on October 19, 1942, is a famous American investor. He is also a financial expert who shares his ideas about money and markets. Today, he lives in Singapore.

Jim Rogers is the head of a company called Beeland Interests, Inc. He also helped create two very important investment groups: the Quantum Fund and Soros Fund Management. He also invented a special way to track prices of raw materials, called the Rogers International Commodities Index (RICI).

Early Life and Education

Jim Rogers was born in Baltimore, Maryland. He grew up in a town called Demopolis, Alabama.

He went to Yale University and earned a bachelor's degree in history in 1964. After that, he got his first job on Wall Street, which is the financial center of New York City.

In 1966, he went to the University of Oxford in England. There, he earned another bachelor's degree in philosophy, politics, and economics.

Later, in 2019, Jim Rogers received an honorary Ph.D. from Pusan National University in South Korea. This was because his books shared positive ideas about the future of Korea.

Jim Rogers' Business Adventures

In 1964, Jim Rogers started working at Dominick & Dominick LLC on Wall Street. This is where he first learned about buying and selling stocks and bonds. From 1966 to 1968, he served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War.

In 1970, Rogers joined an investment bank called Arnhold and S. Bleichroder. There, he worked with another famous investor, George Soros.

Starting the Quantum Fund

In 1973, Jim Rogers and George Soros decided to start their own company. They created the Quantum Fund. This fund was very successful.

From 1973 to 1980, the Quantum Fund grew by an amazing 4,200%. During the same time, the S&P 500, which tracks many big companies, only grew by about 47%. The Quantum Fund was one of the first investment funds to invest all over the world.

Traveling the World

In 1980, Jim Rogers decided to "retire" from the Quantum Fund. He then traveled around the world on a motorcycle! After his travels, he became a guest professor at the Columbia Business School.

From 1990 to 1992, he went on another motorcycle journey. This time, he traveled through China and around the world again. He covered over 100,000 miles (160,000 km) across six continents. This journey was even listed in the Guinness Book of World Records. He wrote a best-selling book called Investment Biker about his adventures and investments.

In 1998, Rogers created the Rogers International Commodity Index. This index helps people track the prices of raw materials like oil, gold, and corn. He believes that investing in agriculture (farming) is a very good idea.

Between 1999 and 2002, Jim Rogers went on another record-breaking trip. He traveled through 116 countries with his wife, Paige Parker. They covered 245,000 kilometers in a special custom-made Mercedes car. He wrote another book, Adventure Capitalist, about this journey.

Life in Singapore

In December 2007, Jim Rogers sold his home in New York City. He moved to Singapore. He explained that he moved because he believed Asian markets offered great investment opportunities.

He wanted his daughters to learn Mandarin, a Chinese language, to prepare them for the future. He famously said, "If you were smart in 1807, you moved to London. If you were smart in 1907, you moved to New York City. And if you are smart in 2007, you move to Asia."

Rogers chose Singapore because he thought the people there were very motivated. He wanted his daughters to grow up in that kind of environment. He also avoided cities like Hong Kong or Shanghai because of pollution concerns for his family's health.

Financial Advice and Views

Jim Rogers often shares his thoughts on the economy and investing. In 2010, he advised students to consider careers in agriculture and mining. He believed that the power was shifting from financial centers to those who produce real goods. He said, "The place to be is in commodities, raw materials, natural resources."

In 2012, he humorously suggested that stockbrokers might end up driving taxis. He said smart ones would learn to drive tractors and work for smart farmers. He even predicted that farmers would be driving fancy cars like Lamborghinis!

Rogers has sometimes been concerned about the US stock market. In 2018, he predicted that the next big downturn in the market would be "the worst in our lifetime."

Personal Life

Jim Rogers has been married three times. He married Lois Biener in 1966, and they divorced in 1969. He then married Jennifer Skolnik in 1974, and they divorced in 1977. In 2000, he married Paige Parker. They have two daughters together.

In 2012, Rogers became an advisor for a company called VTB Capital. He helped with their agriculture division. He believed that Russia and nearby countries had the potential to become a major agricultural powerhouse.
