Jimmi Simpson (born November 21, 1975) is an American actor who has worked in movies, television, and on stage. He has been nominated for several major awards, including a BAFTA Award, a Primetime Emmy Award, and a Screen Actors Guild Award.
Simpson's first movie was Loser in 2000. He has also appeared in films like Herbie: Fully Loaded (2005), Zodiac (2007), Date Night (2010), White House Down (2013), and Unhinged (2020).
On TV, he is known for playing Liam McPoyle in It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia (2005–2023). He has also had important roles in shows like Psych (2009–2013), Westworld (2016–2020), Black Mirror (2017, 2025), and Pachinko (2022). For his work on stage, he won a Theatre World Award for playing the inventor Philo Farnsworth in the Broadway play The Farnsworth Invention.

Early life
Jimmi Simpson was born in Hackettstown, New Jersey, on November 21, 1975. He has two older brothers. He went to Hackettstown High School, which is where he took his first acting class.
After high school, he studied theater at Bloomsburg University and earned a BA degree. He then spent four summers acting at the Williamstown Theatre Festival in Massachusetts, which helped him start his career.
Career
2000–2007: Starting in movies and TV
Simpson's first movie role was as Noah in the comedy Loser (2000). After that, he appeared in the Stephen King TV miniseries Rose Red in 2002. He also had guest roles on popular TV shows like 24, Cold Case, and Carnivàle.
Starting in 2005, he began playing the memorable character Liam McPoyle in It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. During this time, he also acted in movies like the Disney comedy Herbie: Fully Loaded (2005) and the thriller Zodiac (2007), which was praised by critics.
2008–2015: Success on stage and screen
In 2008, Simpson starred in the Broadway play The Farnsworth Invention. He played Philo Farnsworth, the inventor of the television. His performance was called "superb" and he won a Theatre World Award. Around the same time, he appeared as an intern named Lyle on The Late Show with David Letterman.
He continued to appear in TV shows like CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, House, and Psych. He also had roles in movies like The Invention of Lying (2009) and Date Night (2010). From 2011 to 2012, he starred as Dr. Lloyd Lowery in the TV series Breakout Kings.
Later, he played a computer expert in the action movie White House Down (2013). From 2014 to 2015, he played the character Gavin Orsay in the popular Netflix series House of Cards. For this role, he and the other actors were nominated for a Screen Actors Guild Award.
2016–present: Westworld and other major roles
In 2016, Simpson joined the cast of the hit HBO science fiction series Westworld. He played William, a man who visits a Wild West theme park filled with androids. His performance was called "spellbinding." For his work on the show, he was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award.
In 2017, Simpson appeared in the "USS Callister" episode of the science fiction show Black Mirror. This role earned him a nomination for a BAFTA Award.
He then starred as detective Russell Poole in the 2018 miniseries Unsolved, which was about the investigations into the deaths of rappers Tupac Shakur and The Notorious B.I.G.. Critics praised his performance for showing the detective's determination.
More recently, Simpson has appeared in the movies Under the Silver Lake (2018) and Unhinged (2020). He also had a main role in the Apple TV+ series Pachinko and the Showtime series The Man Who Fell to Earth, both in 2022. He has also done voice acting, playing Doctor Royce Hemlock in the animated series Star Wars: The Bad Batch.
Personal life
Simpson met actress Melanie Lynskey from New Zealand in 2001 while they were filming Rose Red. They married in 2007 but later divorced in 2014.
In 2019, Simpson married English actress Sophia Del Pizzo. They separated, and their divorce was announced in 2021.
