James Bartholomew Olsen is a fun fictional character from DC Comics' Superman stories. He is a young photojournalist (someone who takes pictures for news stories) at the Daily Planet newspaper. Jimmy is good friends with Lois Lane and Clark Kent (who is secretly Superman!). He also works well with his boss, Perry White. Jimmy really looks up to his coworkers, seeing them as great examples to follow.
Who is Jimmy Olsen?
Jimmy usually has red hair and wears a bow tie. He works as a young reporter and photographer for the Daily Planet. He works alongside Lois Lane and Clark Kent. Jimmy really admires them and sees them as role models for his career.
In most stories, Jimmy and Superman are very close friends. Because he is Superman's friend, Jimmy has a special way to contact the Man of Steel. Superman gave Jimmy a "signal watch". When Jimmy presses a button on the watch, it sends out a special sound signal. This signal is so high-pitched that only Superman can hear it, no matter where he is on Earth!
In some older comics from the Silver Age of Comic Books (a time in comics history), Jimmy often went on adventures with Superman. Superman would save him from all sorts of tricky or funny situations. There was even a comic series called Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen. This series, published from 1954 to 1974, showed Jimmy in many silly adventures and even strange transformations. Today, stories about Jimmy Olsen are usually more serious.
Jimmy's Special Abilities and Gear
Jimmy's most famous item is his signal watch. This watch sends out a high-pitched sound that only Superman can hear. In a story from 2010, Jimmy said the watch hadn't worked well for a while. He even mentioned that he now uses Morse code to contact Superman. But he still wears the watch just for show!
Mostly in the Silver Age of Comic Books, Jimmy would often change temporarily. Sometimes these changes were good, and sometimes they were not. He also used disguises for different reasons. The many transformations Jimmy went through in the Silver Age are often made fun of in newer comics and TV shows. For example, in one comic, Jimmy mentions three of these transformations. He uses them as reasons for wanting to ban people with superpowers. In another series called Countdown, Jimmy becomes a container for the spirits of dead gods. This makes him show strange new powers.
