Jose Pimentel Ejercito Jr. (born February 17, 1963), known to many as Jinggoy Estrada, is a well-known Filipino politician and actor. He has served as a senator since 2022, and before that, from 2004 to 2016. He is currently the President pro tempore of the Senate, a position he held twice. He also briefly served as the Acting Senate President in 2013. Before becoming a senator, he was the vice mayor and then mayor of San Juan.
Outside of politics, Jinggoy Estrada is also a successful actor, just like his father. He has starred in many action films and even won a "Best Actor Award" in 2007 for his role in the movie Katas ng Saudi.
Early Life and Education
Jinggoy Estrada was born on February 17, 1963, in Manila, Philippines. He went to Ateneo de Manila University for his primary and secondary education. Later, he earned a degree in Economics from the University of the Philippines Manila.
While serving as the Vice Mayor of San Juan at age 25, he also studied Bachelor of Laws for four years at the Lyceum of the Philippines University. In 2007, he received an honorary Doctorate in Humanities from the Laguna State Polytechnic University.
Political Career
Mayor of San Juan (1992–2001)

In 1992, Jinggoy Estrada became the youngest person ever elected as a local chief executive in the Philippines, at just 29 years old. During his three terms as mayor, he led many projects to improve San Juan.
He oversaw the building of modern barangay halls with daycare centers and various recreational areas like gyms and basketball courts. He also helped renovate and repair schools, improve drainage systems, and pave municipal roads. Important projects included the construction of the four-story San Juan Medical Center and the San Juan Municipal Gymnasium. Because of these efforts, San Juan became known as one of the most progressive and peaceful municipalities in the Philippines.
During his last term as mayor, he was also the national president of the League of Municipalities of the Philippines (LMP) from 1998 to 2001.
Senator of the Philippines (2004–2016)
In 2004, Jinggoy Estrada was elected as a senator. During his first term, he introduced many bills and resolutions. He helped pass at least 16 laws, either as the main sponsor or author. He was known as one of the most active senators during this time.
On July 23, 2007, he was elected as Senate President pro tempore. This role means he helps lead the Senate.
In 2010, he was re-elected as a senator, finishing in 2nd place. He continued to serve as Senate President pro tempore during the 15th Congress. He was recognized for having perfect attendance in the Senate, meaning he was always present for sessions.
Batas Kasambahay
Jinggoy Estrada was the main author of the Kasambahay Law, also known as Republic Act 10361. This law is very important because it protects the rights and welfare of domestic workers in the Philippines. It sets standards for their working conditions, privileges, and rights.
2019 Senate Campaign
In 2019, Jinggoy Estrada ran for the Senate again. His half-brother, JV Ejercito, also ran for re-election. They both aimed for a Senate seat. Jinggoy was part of the Hugpong ng Pagbabago senatorial team. However, he did not win a seat in that election.
Senator of the Philippines (2022–present)

Jinggoy Estrada ran for the Senate once more in the 2022 Philippine Senate election. He was part of the UniTeam Alliance and supported the campaigns of Bongbong Marcos for president and Sara Duterte for vice president. His half-brother, JV Ejercito, also ran again. This time, both brothers won Senate seats. Jinggoy placed 12th, earning his third term, and JV placed 10th.
Currently, Senator Estrada chairs important committees in the Senate. These include the Senate Committee on Labor, Employment and Human Resources Development and the Senate Committee on National Defense and Security, Peace, Unification and Reconciliation.
In October 2022, Senator Estrada shared his thoughts on supporting Filipino artists. He expressed concern that while many people enjoy entertainment from other countries, local artists might not be getting enough support. He clarified that he was simply frustrated that the local entertainment industry might be struggling due to a lack of public support.
Return as President Pro Tempore of the Senate (2024)
In May 2024, Jinggoy Estrada was again elected as the President pro tempore of the Senate of the Philippines. This is a significant leadership role in the Senate, which he had held before from 2007 to 2013. He was sworn into this position by the newly elected President of the Senate of the Philippines, Francis Escudero. He took over from Senator Loren Legarda.
