Youth Career Highlights
Jiří Veselý was a very talented young player. He became the No. 1 junior tennis player in the world in January 2011. This means he was the best young player globally before he became a professional.
Professional Tennis Journey
Early Career and First Wins (2012–2015)
Jiří started his professional career in 2009. He played his first match for the Czech Republic in the Davis Cup in February 2013. The Davis Cup is a big international team competition in men's tennis.
He won many smaller tournaments early in his career. These included nine titles on the ITF Futures circuit and three on the ATP Challenger circuit. These wins helped him improve his ranking.
In 2015, Jiří won his first ATP Tour singles title at the ATP Auckland Open in New Zealand. He also reached another final that year at the Romanian Open. He achieved his highest singles ranking of No. 35 in April 2015.
Big Wins and Wimbledon Success (2016)
The year 2016 was exciting for Jiří. He achieved two big wins against players ranked in the top 10. One of these was against Novak Djokovic, who was the world No. 1 player at the time. This happened at the Monte-Carlo Masters.
Jiří also had a great run at Wimbledon, one of the four Grand Slam tournaments. He reached the fourth round, which was his best performance there so far. Unfortunately, he had to pull out of a match against Novak Djokovic at the US Open due to an arm injury.
Second Singles Title (2017–2020)
Jiří continued to play well in the following years. In 2017, he won his second ATP Tour doubles title at the Istanbul Open in Turkey.
In 2020, he reached his first singles final since 2015 at the Maharashtra Open in India. He won this tournament, which was his second singles title. He had to save four match points in one of his matches to reach the final.
Another Victory Over Djokovic (2022)
The 2022 season brought another big moment for Jiří. At the Dubai Championships, he defeated Novak Djokovic again. This was a huge win because Djokovic was still the world No. 1 player. This victory also helped another player, Daniil Medvedev, become the new world No. 1.
Jiří then reached his first ATP 500 final at the same tournament. He beat another top player, Denis Shapovalov, in the semifinals. He eventually lost in the final to Andrey Rublev. After this tournament, his ranking improved a lot, moving from No. 123 to No. 74.
Later in 2022, Jiří reached the third round at Wimbledon. He continued to compete in various tournaments around the world.
Returning to the Tour (2023–2024)
After some time away, Jiří returned to playing in 2023. He used a special "protected ranking" to enter tournaments. He won his first match back on the ATP Tour at the 2023 Wimbledon Championships.
He also had a strong performance at the US Open, reaching the third round. This matched his best result at that Grand Slam. He won two tough five-set matches before losing in the third round. In May 2024, he won another Challenger title in Prague.

Jiří has worked with several coaches throughout his career. Some of his former coaches include Jaroslav Navrátil and Dušan Lojda. In 2015, he started working with Tomáš Krupa, who had previously coached another famous Czech tennis player, Tomáš Berdych.
