Tomáš Berdych (born September 17, 1985) is a former professional tennis player from the Czech Republic. He was once ranked as high as world No. 4 in men's singles by the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) in May 2015. Tomáš won 13 singles titles on the ATP Tour, including a big win at the 2005 Paris Masters.
One of his biggest achievements was reaching the final of the 2010 Wimbledon Championships. On his way to the final, he beat famous players like Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic. Tomáš also made it to the semifinals of all four major tennis tournaments, known as Grand Slams. He was known for being one of the few players who could often challenge the "Big Four" in tennis.

Early Life and Tennis Beginnings
Tomáš Berdych was born in Valašské Meziříčí, which is in the Czech Republic. He started playing tennis at age five in his hometown. His father, Martin, was a train engineer and a good tennis player himself. His mother, Hana, is a doctor. Tomáš remembers his childhood as being very happy.
When he was eight, he won a top junior tennis title in the Czech Republic. He later moved to Prostějov to train with better coaches and practice partners. Because of the cold winters in the Czech Republic, he often practiced indoors. This is why he prefers playing on hard courts, especially indoors.
Personal Interests
Tomáš is a big fan of ice hockey. His favorite team is the Detroit Red Wings. He has met many Czech hockey players, including famous ones like Jaromír Jágr. These players are also tennis fans and have played with Tomáš. He enjoys playing on hard courts and thinks his best shots are his forehand and serve.
Tomáš was in a relationship with tennis player Lucie Šafářová for a long time. He later got engaged to model Ester Sátorová in 2014, and they married in July 2015. He also likes the Irish rock band U2 and supports the football team Manchester United.

Becoming a Pro Player (2001–2003)
As a junior player, Tomáš was ranked as high as No. 6 in the world in 2003. He won the 2001 US Open Boys' Doubles title. He became a professional player in 2002. In 2003, he won his first ATP Tour match at the 2003 US Open.
First Big Wins (2004)
In 2004, Tomáš played in his first 2004 Australian Open. He also made his debut at the 2004 French Open and Wimbledon. A big moment for him was at the 2004 Summer Olympics. He surprised everyone by beating the world No. 1 player, Roger Federer. He then reached the quarterfinals of the Olympics. Later that year, he won his first ATP title in Palermo, Italy.
Winning a Masters Title (2005)
The year 2005 started slowly for Tomáš. However, he had a great run at the 2005 Paris Masters. He won his first ever ATP Masters Series title there. This was a huge step in his career.
Breaking into the Top 10 (2006)
In 2006, Tomáš continued to improve. He reached his first grass-court final at the 2006 Gerry Weber Open, where he played against Roger Federer. He also beat Rafael Nadal at the 2006 Rogers Cup. After these strong performances, Tomáš reached the top 10 in the world rankings for the first time.
More Titles and Grand Slam Success (2007–2010)
Tomáš won his third ATP singles title in Halle in 2007. He also reached the quarterfinals of Wimbledon that year, which was his best Grand Slam result at the time. In 2008, he won his first ATP 500 title in Japan.
The year 2010 was a standout year for Tomáš. He reached the semifinals of the 2010 French Open, which was his best performance there. Then, at Wimbledon, he made it to his first Grand Slam final. He beat both Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic on his way to the final, but he lost to Rafael Nadal.

Later Career and Retirement (2016–2019)
In 2016, Tomáš reached the semifinals of Wimbledon again. However, he had to miss the US Open due to appendicitis, which ended his long streak of playing in every Grand Slam since 2003.
In 2017, he reached his third Wimbledon semifinal, losing to Roger Federer. The end of 2017 and much of 2018 were affected by a back injury. He returned in 2019 but continued to struggle with injuries. Tomáš Berdych announced his retirement from professional tennis on November 16, 2019.
Coaching Role
After retiring as a player, Tomáš Berdych was named the Davis Cup captain for the Czech Republic on September 15, 2024.
Equipment and Clothing
Throughout his career, Tomáš used rackets from Head. He also had different clothing sponsors. From 2013, he partnered with the Swedish fashion company H&M and even helped design tennis wear for them. Later, he moved to Adidas in 2016 and then to the Italian clothing company Hydrogen in 2018.
