Tomáš Berdych (born September 17, 1985) is a former professional Czech tennis player. He is best known for reaching the final of the 2010 Wimbledon Championships. On his way to the final, he beat top players like Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic. He later lost to Rafael Nadal in the final match.
Berdych also won a big title called the Paris Masters in 2005. He reached the semifinals at all four major Grand Slam tournaments. He is considered one of the best tennis players who never won a Grand Slam title. He also played in the longest ATP doubles match ever, which lasted over 7 hours!

Early Life and Tennis Start
Tomáš Berdych was born in Valašské Meziříčí, which is now part of the Czech Republic. He started playing tennis at age five in his hometown. His father, Martin, was a train engineer and a good tennis player. His mother, Hana, is a doctor. Tomáš remembers his childhood as very happy.
When he was eight, he won a top junior tournament in the Czech Republic. He soon became a top young player, winning the Czech Republic Under-12 Junior Title. He then moved to Prostějov to train with better coaches and more practice partners.
Because of the cold winters in the Czech Republic, Tomáš often practiced indoors. This is why he prefers playing on hard courts, especially indoors.
Personal Life and Hobbies
Tomáš Berdych enjoys ice hockey. His favorite team is the Detroit Red Wings. He has met many famous Czech hockey players, including Jaromír Jágr. These players are also big tennis fans and have played tennis with Tomáš.
His favorite tennis surface is the hard court. He thinks his best shots are his forehand and serve. Tomáš was in a long relationship with tennis player Lucie Šafářová. In 2015, he married model Ester Sátorová.
Tomáš is a fan of the Irish rock band U2. He hopes to meet their lead singer, Bono, one day. His favorite TV show is Suits. In football, Tomáš supports Manchester United.

Junior Success and Turning Pro
As a junior player, Tomáš Berdych was ranked as high as No. 6 in the world in 2003. He won the 2001 US Open Boys' Doubles title with his partner Stéphane Bohli.
He became a professional tennis player in 2002. He won his first ATP Tour match at the 2003 US Open.
First Big Wins (2004-2005)
In 2004, Tomáš made his debut at the 2004 French Open and Wimbledon. A big moment came at the 2004 Summer Olympics. He surprised everyone by beating the world No. 1 player, Roger Federer. This was a huge win for him. He then won his first ATP title in Palermo, Italy.

In 2011, he won his sixth career title at the China Open. He also reached the semifinals of the 2011 ATP World Tour Finals for the first time.
In 2012, Tomáš won the 2012 Hopman Cup with Petra Kvitová for the Czech Republic. He also won his seventh career title in France. At the US Open, he reached the semifinals after beating Roger Federer. He also helped the Czech Republic win the 2012 Davis Cup title.
More Success and Injuries (2013-2019)
In 2013, Tomáš played in the longest doubles match ever at the 2013 Davis Cup. It lasted over 7 hours! He also helped the Czech Republic win their second straight Davis Cup title.
In 2014, he reached the semifinals of the 2014 Australian Open. He won two titles that year, including the ABN-AMBRO championship in Rotterdam.
In 2015, Tomáš reached his second Australian Open semifinal. On May 18, he reached his highest career ranking of No. 4 in the world. He won two more titles that year, the Shenzhen Open and the Stockholm Open.
In 2016, Tomáš reached the semifinals of Wimbledon again. He had to miss the US Open due to a health issue, ending a long streak of playing in every Grand Slam since 2003.
In 2017, he reached the semifinals of Wimbledon for the third time. He had to end his season early due to a back injury.
In 2018 and 2019, Tomáš continued to struggle with back injuries. He played his last match at the US Open in 2019. On November 16, 2019, Tomáš Berdych officially announced his retirement from professional tennis.
Coaching Career
On September 15, 2024, Tomáš Berdych was named the Davis Cup captain for the Czech Republic.
Equipment and Clothing
Tomáš Berdych used rackets from Head. He also had clothing sponsorships during his career. From 2013, he partnered with the Swedish fashion company H&M and even helped design tennis wear for them. Later, he moved to Adidas for his clothing. In 2018, he became an ambassador for the Italian clothing company Hydrogen.
